Baseball America's 2001 All-America Team

Mark Prior
USC's Mark Prior

DURHAM, N.C.--Despite a down year in the rankings and the College World Series, the Atlantic Coast Conference led Division I by placing three players on Baseball America's first-team All-America squad, including its only sophomore.

ACC player of the year John-Ford Griffin (Florida State), sophomore third baseman Jeff Baker (Clemson) and outfielder/pitcher Cory Sullivan (Wake Forest) gave the ACC more players than any other league. However, no ACC players made the second- or third-team lists.

The Big 12 and Pacific-10 Conferences had two representatives apiece with catcher Kelly Shoppach (Baylor) and outfielder John Cole (Nebraska), and outfielder Shelley Duncan (Arizona) and pitcher Mark Prior (Southern California). Cole is the first Canadian to make the All-America first team. The Southeastern Conference had five members on the three teams, led by first-team shortstop Chris Burke.

Among the repeat members of the team are second-team catcher Casey Myers (Arizona State), who occupied the same spot a year ago, as did second-team pitcher Shane Komine (Nebraska). Burke was a third-teamer last year who moved up to the first team, while pitcher Kenny Baugh (Rice) moved from the third team to second-team honors. First Team
