Big recruits and big surprises highlight Baseball America's Freshman All-America team. North Carolina State, which had a surprising season by earning its first regional bid since 1999 and played host to a regional for the first time ever, was one of two schools to place two players on the All-Freshman team in righthanders Michael Rogers and Joey Devine. The other was Cal State Fullerton, which reached the College World Series thanks in part to the contributions of infielder Justin Turner (named to the All-Freshman team as a second baseman) and outfielder Danny Dorn.

Dorn and Miami's Ryan Braun, the shortstop on the All-Freshman team, broke their school's freshman RBI records, held by big leaguers Phil Nevin (Cal State Fullerton) and Pat Burrell (Miami).

The Pacific-10 Conference placed four players on the team while the Atlantic Coast Conference has three. The four Pac-10 players include Stanford lefthander Mark Romanczuk, who took his first loss in 13 decisions at the College World Series on Sunday; Southern California catcher Jeff Clement, who lived up to his reputation as the national prep home run record-holder by bashing 21 home runs for the Trojans; Arizona third baseman Brad Boyer, who helped lead the Wildcats back to regional play; and Washington outfielder Brent Lillibridge, whose slugging percentage bested that of even Clement.

The ACC's third player named is two-way terror Micah Owings of Georgia Tech, a righthander-DH who led the Yellow Jackets in wins and home runs. Another two-way player, Mississippi's Stephen Head, was named to the first team at first base. Head also had nine saves as the Rebels' closer.
