Elkins High of Missouri City, Texas, made its case for a national title by winning the Texas 5-A state championship on June 8. Sunday, the Knights (35-1) were officially crowned national champions when they were unanimously voted No. 1 in the final high school poll conducted by Baseball America and the National High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Elkins was ranked No. 2 nationally in the BA/NHSBCA preseason poll and flip-flopped positions with Bishop Amat High of La Puente, Calif., which started out No. 1, lost two early games and went on to win 26 games in a row as it captured the California Interscholastic Federation Southern section IV title.
