2003 Baseball America
High School All-America Team

by Alan Matthews
June 23, 2003

DURHAM, N.C.-- After completing the 2003 season without allowing an earned run, Massachusetts righthander Jeff Allison headlines Baseball America's 2003 High School All-America first team.

Allison, a first-round pick of the Marlins, was one of eight first-round choices from this year's first-year player draft to be named to first team. The second team features two first-round picks and a trio of second-round selections.

Allison led Veterans Memorial High of Peabody, Mass., to a 20-2 record and a top-50 final national ranking with a 9-0, 0.00 campaign. Allison struck out 142 batters and walked just nine in 64 innings on his way to being named Baseball America's High School Player of the Year.

Righthanders Justin Cassel (15-0, 1.13) of Chatsworth (Calif.) High, Jeff Manship (13-2, 0.58) of Ronald Reagan High in San Antonio, Adam Miller (10-2, 0.49) of McKinney (Texas) High and Stuart Pomeranz (13-1, 0.52) of Houston High in Collierville, Tenn., and lefthander Wade LeBlanc (16-1, 0.45) of Barbe High in Lake Charles, La., joined Allison on the first team pitching staff.

Seven of the 30 selections from the two team hail from California, one more than Texas placed on the teams. A strong year for prep baseball in Louisiana produced a pair of All-Americans and Florida, Ohio and Tennessee were also represented with two players.

Outfielders Lastings Milledge and Delmon Young, both first-round picks in the 2003 draft, were named to the first team for the second consecutive year. Shortstop/righthander Matt Bush of Mission Bay High in San Diego was the lone underclassman named to either team.
