By Nathan Rode
March 28, 2011
The latest Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25 saw shakeup near the top, but Mountain View, Calif.'s St. Francis High held on to the No. 1 spot. No. 2 Farragut High of Knoxville opened its season since the last poll and dropped eight spots to No. 10 after dropping two games between two different tournaments. Jesuit High of Tampa was ranked No. 3 when it faced off against Miami's Gulliver Prep, No. 11 at the time. Gulliver was victorious after 10 innings of a back-and-forth battle and moved up to No. 6 while Jesuit dropped to No. 12. Corpus Christi's Carroll High fell to No. 13 after losing its fifth game of the season.
Former No. 7 Klein-Collins High of Spring, Texas suffered the worst hit, falling out of the Top 25 after taking on a sixth loss. Seven other teams dropped out this week, opening the door for fresh faces. Mesquite High of Gilbert, Ariz. made the biggest jump from unranked to No. 15. The Wildcats are off to a great start in Arizona, defeating typical powers like Scottsdale's Desert Mountain and Horizon as well as Chandler's Hamilton High, which fell out of the rankings from No. 20. The only ranked team yet to play is Ramsey, N.J.'s Don Bosco Prep. The Ironmen open their season on April 1.
The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of March 12 and do not include ties.
