High School Top 25: June 7
Compiled by Nathan Rode
June 8, 2010
Playoffs have proved to be a killer for some teams, while others have vaulted others into the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association poll. Rockwall-Heath High (Heath, Texas) was in contention for a national title if they could win their state title. But the Hawks were eliminated this weekend in the region finals—one series win from the state final four. La Puente, Calif.'s Bishop Amat High was also eliminated early, whittling the national title race down to two teams—Klein and Flanagan High (Pembroke Pines, Fla.). Texas' state tournament is underway this week and the champions will be decided before the upcoming weekend is over.
Mater Dei High of Santa Ana, Calif. made a great run through the playoffs and captured the Division I Southern Section title thanks to a combined perfect game from senior lefthander Cory Hahn and sophomore righthander Ty Moore. Knoxville's Farragut High added to it's dynasty resume with a third straight 3-A title in Tenneessee. Junior shortstop Nicky Delmonico hit a walk-off home run after lefthander Philip Pfeifer twirled another gem.
The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25
rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released
every other Tuesday throughout the season. Records indicated are as of June 6 and do not include ties.
