High School Top 25
Staff Report
May 12, 2009
After seeing Menchville High (Newport News, Va.) drop its first game of the season, Bellaire (Texas) High retakes the top spot in the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association Top 25.
The new No. 1 climbed to the top spot even as its schedule has been cut back. Texas is under a state-wide postponement of sporting events due to the rising concern over the swine flu virus. The Cardinals managed to get a few games in this past weekend and improve to 25-1. Two Corpus Christi powers—Moody and Calallen High—moved up as Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) slipped out of the rankings after losing three of its last seven games.
Tampa's Jesuit High made an early exit from the playoffs. Local foe Plant High avenged an early season loss to the Tigers, beating them 3-2 in extra innings in the regional semifinal round. Lakeland (Fla.) High was also eliminated and dropped from the rankings. The Dreadnaughts lost 7-1 to Tampa's Alonso High in the regional quarterfinals. Alonso entered the rankings at No. 22 after beating Lakeland and Gaither High, also of Tampa.
The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. The final poll will be released June 9 and will expand to 50 teams. Records indicated are as of May 10 and do not include ties.
