High School Top 25: April 28
Newport News' Menchville High is the new No. 1
Staff Report
April 28, 2009
The merry-go-round continues as the curse of being ranked No. 1 bites Tampa's Jesuit High. On the verge of an undefeated season, Jesuit faced perennial contender Sarasota (Fla.) High in its season finale. The Sailors prevailed, blanking the Tigers 7-0, which led to their drop from No. 1 to No. 3. Menchville High of Newport News, Va. takes over the top spot as the Monarchs remain undefeated with a 17-0 mark while Bellaire (Texas) High stayed put at No. 2.
The Anderson Bat National Classic in Anaheim, Calif. crowned Mater Dei High (Santa Ana, Calif.) champions over a week ago and was once again unkind to Northern schools. Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) tumbled out of the Top 25 after losing the first three games in Anaheim.
The staffs of Baseball America and the NHSBCA compile the Top 25 rankings. In-season polls will be conducted every two weeks and released every other Tuesday throughout the season. The final poll will be released June 9 and will expand to 50 teams. Records indicated are as of April 26 and do not include ties.
