Jeremy Guthrie
June 14, 2002

Moderator: Jeremy Guthrie joins the Baseball America tradition of having a Stanford player do an online chat during the College World Series. His predecessors were Justin Wayne in 2000 and Chris O'Riordan in 2001. Guthrie earned his shot at the chat room by being the Cardinal ace the last two seasons, including last year, his first time back in the United States after a two-year Mormon mission to Spain. His strong finish this year left him with a 12-1, 2.34 record. Jeremy squeezed in a short chat between his CBS interviews and Friday morning practice time.

Q:  Mark L. Peel from Arlington Heights, IL asks:
How have you pitched against the teams you'll be facing in this year's CWS?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: The only team that we have faced in the College World Series this year is the Texas Longhorns, they are a very good and deep club and they played very well against us. We were very fortunate to win 2 out of 3 games against them. They did a good job against me and I was lucky to get a no decision because of a Chris O'Riordon 9th inning grand slam. I will have to make some adjustments if I face them.

Q:  Jordan Gazza from Homer City asks:
Do you think Notre Dame has a chance?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: Notre Dame is a great team and they proved that against FSU. We are going to have to play well if we hope to win tomorrow. They hit the ball very well and they pitch consistently also. They deserve to be here in Omaha.

 Q:  Maura from Massachusetts asks:
How much will you rely on scouting reports when facing Notre Dame hitters?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: Our coaching staff does a very good job of scouting other teams and our pitching staff usually relies on Coach Kunis to call the games. We have the option to change any pitch and we do that if see something or have the intuition to throw a certain pitch.

 Q:  Kevin from Cleveland asks:
Hey Jeremy, as an Indians fan I am delighted the Tribe selected you. If all goes well in negoiations how excited are you at the prospect of becoming a Cleveland Indians player?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: I am very excited and grateful to have been selected by the Indians. They are a good organization and I respect their management. Fortunately I have the responsability of worrying about the CWS right now and I will worry about my next step after the season is over.

 Q:  Bob from Florida asks:
Who do you think will be the most dangerous hitter in Omaha?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: I think that there are a number of great hitters in Omaha this year and I will be facing one of these tomorrow in Steve Stanley. He has incredible numbers and he is a great hitter. Texas also has a number of good hitters and so they are very dangerous. We all know about Baker and Greene from Clemson also and they are tremendous hitters.

Q:  Harry Jimerson from Great Plains, NY asks:
Okay, it's the bottom of the ninth inning. Man on second base, two outs. You are on the mound. Who would be the last hitter you'd want to see up with the game on the line?
 A:

Jeremy Guthrie: I think that if you are scared to face anyone in this situation then you are already beat, you need to have confidence that you can get anybody out and thrive under the pressure of facing a great hitter.

Jeremy Guthrie: Hello guys, thanks a lot for the questions and I hope you all enjoy the College World Series. It will be a great 8 days of baseball. Go Cardinal!
