College Top 25: April 13
LSU returns to No. 1
Staff Report
April 13, 2009
DURHAM, N.C.—Louisiana State took two of three on the road against conference rival Alabama to return to the No. 1 spot in the Baseball America Top 25 rankings for the second time this season.
Arizona State, last week's No. 1, dropped a two-game midweek series against No. 11 Arkansas, paving the way for LSU, Rice and UC Irvine to slide up to the top three spots while the Sun Devils dropped to No. 4. The rest of the top 10 stayed the same, with the exception of Oklahoma earning a spot at No. 10 after winning its weekend series with Texas Tech.
After the top 10, there was plenty of movement throughout the rankings. Mountain West Conference rivals San Diego State and Texas Christian both moved up three spots to Nos. 15 and 16, respectively. Another big mover was Coastal Carolina, which jumped four positions to No. 20 after posting a 5-0 week that included a weekend sweep of Radford.
No. 1 Texas A&M dropped out of the rankings after losing a weekend series to Kansas State, which was one of four teams to move into the rankings this week. In a sign of the parity sweeping through college baseball, three of the newcomers are unfamiliar faces in the rankings. Kansas State and Gonzaga are ranked in the top 25 for the first time ever, while Kansas makes its first appearance since May 29, 2006. Minnesota returns to the rankings after a one-week absence thanks to a weekend sweep of Northwestern.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of April 12 and do not include ties.
