Fresno State captures first ever national title
Staff Report
June 30, 2008
DURHAM, N.C.—Fresno State's magical run to the College World Series championship garnered the top spot in Baseball America's final 2008 Top 25 college rankings.
Fresno State, ranked 18th in the preseason, lost two of its first four games to UC Davis and proceeded to fall out of the Top 25 until the week before super-regionals, getting back in at No. 17. The Bulldogs then won the rest of their games against top eight national seeds, beating Arizona State twice in the super-regional, then beating Rice, North Carolina (twice) and Georgia (twice) to win the CWS.
The rest of the rankings remained mostly reflect how the teams finished in Omaha, with runner-up Georgia ranking second, followed by North Carolina and Miami, which entered the tournament ranked No. 1. Stanford, Louisiana State, Florida State and Rice round out the top eight, with the rest of the rankings unchanged.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of June 9 and do not include ties.
