Staff Report
May 19, 2008
DURHAM, N.C.—There's a new team atop the Baseball America Top 25 Rankings, as North Carolina went on the road and defeated then-No.1 Miami to move up to the top spot, ending the Hurricanes' six-week run on top of the Rankings.
After the Tar Heels, Arizona State moved up to No. 2 after sweeping Washington in impressive fashion, while Miami slid to No. 3. Rice entered the Top 5 after sweeping then-No. 25 Tulane on the road. The Owls have won 22 of their last 23 games and cruised to the Conference USA regular season title for the third straight year.
Missouri moved back into the Top 10 this week after sweeping then-No.5 Nebraska, outscoring the Cornhuskers 37-13 in the process. Louisiana State was another big mover this week, as the Tigers continued their meteoric rise up the Rankings by sweeping Auburn on the road to jump up six spots to No. 10. The Tigers stretched their winning streak to 16 games, the longest in the nation.
Two teams returned to the Rankings this week. Texas re-enters the Rankings after a four-week absence at No. 24 after sweeping arch-rival Texas A&M. The Longhorns are followed by Long Beach State at No. 25, who swept Cal Poly on the road to earn their way back into the Rankings as well.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of May 18 and do not include ties.
