College Top 25: April 7
Miami takes over the top spot
Staff Report
April 7, 2008
DURHAM, N.C.—It was a tumultuous week in college baseball, and that's reflected in the new Baseball America Top 25 Rankings, where Miami's the new team at the top.
The Hurricanes moved up to the top spot for the first time this year by sweeping their weekend series against Clemson. Miami posted a 5-0 week, improving its record to 26-2 and 12-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Miami's in-state rival Florida State moved into the Top 5 for the first time in 2008 by sweeping then-No. 14 Virginia over the weekend and notching a decisive midweek win over rival Florida. California was another team that made a big jump, as the Bears moved up to No. 6 by winning their weekend series against Oregon State.
There was movement throughout the rankings. Cal State Fullerton used a road series victory over UC Irvine, then ranked fifth, to jump nine spots to No. 16. Meanwhile, two formerly top ranked teams both fell out of the rankings. UCLA, the preseason No. 1, and Arizona, the preseason No. 2, both fell out after losing their weekend series.
Three new teams moved into the rankings this week. No. 14 Georgia came into the rankings for the first time this season by sweeping South Carolina. The Bulldogs improved to 20-10 and 9-3 in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia's fellow SEC member Mississippi moved back into the rankings thanks to their sweep of Vanderbilt, and Oklahoma State also moved into the rankings thanks to a series victory at then-No. 4 Missouri.
The staff of Baseball America determines the Top 25 rankings. Records indicated are through games of April 6 and do not include ties.
