South Carolina kept chugging along in the week after top freshmen Lonnie Chisenhall and Nick Fuller were kicked off the team. The Gamecocks broke open a 3-2 game by scoring 17 runs over the final five frames Friday, led by So. 3B James Darnell (3-for-7, HR, 4 RBI) and So. SS Reese Havens (5-for-6, 3 2B, 4 RBI). Darnell had three more hits Saturday, but USC's bats went cold over the final six innings and Mississippi State pushed across the winning run in the 12th. So. 1B Justin Smoak (4-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) carried the offense Sunday, and Jr. RHP Wynn Pelzer (2.1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K, 0 BB) threw very well in relief.

Sr. RHP Michael Hyde (7 IP, 2 ER) joined him in the eight-win club Saturday, with help from Florida State's six-run second inning. Jr. RHP Ryan Strauss (7 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K, 2 BB) picked up his sixth win Sunday, when Guinn went 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs.

Vandy trailed 2-1 heading into the eighth inning Saturday, but So. 3B Pedro Alvarez' three-run homer highlighted a four-run outburst to make So. RHP Nick Christiani (7.1 IP, 2 ER, 5 BB) a winner. So. RHP Brett Jacobson didn't make it out of the second inning Sunday, though the Commodores kept it close until Arkansas' five-run fifth.

Fr. 1B Dustin Ackley continued his inexorable march toward Freshman of the Year honors on Friday, going 4-for-6 with two homers, four RBIs and four runs scored in UNC's rout. Fr. RHP Alex White, one of Ackley's biggest competitors for top freshman honors thus far, suffered his first collegiate loss Saturday (5.2 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 1 BB), as the Carolina bats went cold. On Sunday, Fr. OF Tim Fedroff (3-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) paced the offense out of the leadoff spot, and Ackley added two more hits in support of Jr. RHP Luke Putkonen (7 IP, 1 ER, 7 K). Through 103 at-bats, Ackley is hitting an absurd .485/.509/.718 with 36 RBIs.

Jr. RHP Duke Welker (8 IP, 5 R, 1 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB) turned in his third straight strong start Saturday, though he picked up his first loss of the year after allowing an eighth-inning, three-run homer to Pedro Alvarez. Jr. RHP Jess Todd allowed just one run on four hits over six innings in relief of Fr. LHP Dallas Keuchel on Sunday, when Jr. C Brian Walker (2-for-3, 2B, grand slam, 5 RBI) paced the offense. It was Todd's second win of the weekend.

The Owls cobbled together three runs in the seventh inning Saturday to break a 1-1 tie, and held on for a 5-3 win. Jr. LHP/DH Joe Savery (3 IP, 2 ER, 5 H; 2-for-4, 4 RBI) helped Rice more with his bat than his arm Sunday, and So. 2B Aaron Luna (2-for-4, HR, 4 RBI) helped lead the offensive onslaught.

Jr. RHP Adrian Alaniz breezed through seven shutout innings Saturday, aided by a 14-run, 17-hit Texas attack. Russell blasted his 15th homer in that one, and Suttle followed with his eighth on Sunday, when Sr. RHP Randy Boone couldn't hold a 9-6 lead, allowing five runs to score in the seventh and eighth innings.

Clemson's six-game winning streak turned into a three-game losing streak before the Tigers salvaged Sunday's series finale at Maryland. Clemson fell behind 3-0 early Friday, but Jr. RHP Alan Farina (4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 8 K, 0 BB) relieved starter P.J. Zocchi and kept the Terrapins at bay until the ninth, when the Tigers tied the game with three runs against All-American LHP Brett Cecil, only to see their own All-American closer, Jr. LHP Daniel Moskos, surrender the winning run in the bottom of the frame. Clemson mustered just four hits and made three errors (leading to two unearned runs) in Saturday's loss. Jr. RHP David Kopp (7 IP, 0 R, 6 H, 5 K, 0 BB) was strong in his return to the weekend rotation Sunday, and the Tigers supported him with a 12-hit attack.

Five CSF relievers combined to throw 8.1 scoreless innings of relief Saturday before Jr. RHP Nolan Bruyninckx surrendered the game-winning run in the bottom of the 14th, ending a five-hour, 43-minute affair. Klipp (3.2 IP, 0 R, 2 H) picked up his second win of the weekend Sunday, when Fullerton overcame a 5-3 deficit with four runs in the ninth, capped by Hardman's two-out, two-run single.

The Chanticleers are also off to their best start since 1983, when they started 25-3-1. So. OF David Sappelt ran his hitting streak to 16 games before it was snapped Sunday; his three-run homer broke a scoreless tie in the fifth Friday, helping Sr. LHP Andy DeLaGarza (6.2 IP, 0 R) improve to 6-0. Sr. 1B Chris Raber homered twice and drove in five in support of So. RHP Bobby Gagg (6 IP, 1 ER) on Saturday. Coastal scored six in the first Sunday and held on for the win. So. RHP/DH David Anderson has continued to thrive in the closer role, picking up three saves on the week over 4.1 scoreless IP, allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

Two freshmen carried the Sun Devils on the mound Saturday, as RHP Mike Leake (7.1 IP, 3 ER) pitched well in his second start in 13 appearances, and RHP Jason Jarvis (1.2 IP, 0 R, 1 H) picked up a save in his first appearance after finally getting ruled eligible by the NCAA. Wallace went 4-for-4 with two homers in a wild game Sunday, but Jarvis surrendered a walk-off two-run home to Lucas Duda in the bottom of the ninth. Wallace is batting .466/.548/.853 with 10 homers and 40 RBIs through 116 at-bats.

The Aggies got three homers Friday to support Jr. LHP David Newmann (6.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 3 BB). Texas A&M's middle infielders committed three errors behind So. RHP Kyle Thebeau (5.1 IP, 6 R, 3 ER) in Saturday's loss. Jr. SS Brandon Hicks (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Sr. 2B Parker Dalton (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) helped atone for their defensive lapses with their bats on Sunday, but the Sooners scored four runs in the eighth to force extra innings and won it in the 11th. Sr. RHP Kyle Nicholson (7.1 IP, 5 ER) returned to the rotation in that one.

The Dirtbags and Titans combined to leave 28 runners on base in Saturday's 5-hour, 43-minute marathon, which saw Sr. LHP Omar Arif tie his career high with 6.2 IP and strike out a career-high six before closer Bryan Shaw blew the save. But Jr. RHP Andrew Liebel preserved the tie with four shutout innings of relief in extra frames, and the Dirtbags won when Fr. Steve Tinoco singled home Sr. DH A.J. Pinocchio in the 14th. Shaw blew another save opportunity Sunday (his third straight after converting five of his first six chances) as the Titans overcame a 5-3 deficit with a four-run ninth.

RHP Brad Boxberger (8 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 9 K, 3 BB) pitched well in a loss Saturday but allowed ASU to manufacture the game-winning run in the eighth. Jr. OF Lucas Duda hit a grand slam in USC's eight-run sixth inning Sunday, then delivered a walk-off, two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Trojans improved to 9-2 in one-run games this season.
