2013 Preseason College All-America Team
Compiled by Aaron Fitt
January 31, 2013
DURHAM, N.C.—Second-ranked Vanderbilt leads all teams with four players on Baseball America's preseason All-America teams, released today. The Commodores did not land any players on the first team, but they produced the catcher (Spencer Navin), first baseman (Conrad Gregor) and second baseman (Tony Kemp) on the second team, and added a starting pitcher on the third team (Kevin Ziomek).
No. 9 Stanford has the most first-teamers with three. Senior righthander Mark Appel is the only repeat first-teamer from last year's preseason team, and he is joined on the first team by Cardinal outfielder Austin Wilson and first baseman Brian Ragira. No. 3 Arkansas (righthanders Ryne Stanek, Colby Suggs) and No. 8 North Carolina State (shortstop Trea Turner and lefthander Carlos Rodon) are the only other teams to land multiple players on the first team. The Wolfpack players are the only sophomores on the first team.
Appel isn't the only repeat All-American; Four other players earned preseason All-America honors a year ago and again heading into 2013. North Carolina's Colin Moran (nephew of longtime big leaguer B.J. Surhoff) moves up from the second team last year to the first team this year. San Diego's Kris Bryant and Arkansas' Ryne Stanek jump from last year's third team to this year's first team. Florida's Karsten Whitson repeats as a third-teamer, and Connecticut's L.J. Mazzilli (son of longtime big leaguer Lee) was a second-teamer last year but lands on the third team as a senior.
Baseball America annually polls major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. In the past, the preseason All-America team has been a predictor both of the first round of the draft and of team success. For example, nine of the 15 draft-eligible members of last year's first team became first-round picks last June, two others were supplemental first-rounders, and all 15 were selected in the top three rounds. In all, 16 of the 18 players drafted in the first round out of four-year colleges last year appeared on one of BA's three preseason All-America teams heading into the season.
Appel, who elected to return for his senior year at Stanford rather than sign with the Pirates as the No. 8 overall pick last year, was the only unanimous selection in the scouting director balloting.
The Southeastern Conference places 14 players on the three All-America teams, leading all leagues, as usual. But the Pacific-12 Conference lands more players on the first team (four) than the SEC (three) or the ACC (three). The Pac-12 produces nine All-Americans overall, followed by the ACC and Big 12 conferences with five apiece.
