College Player Of The Year Watch

Updated April 29, 2004

Wade Townsend, rhp • Rice

More than halfway through the season, no clear favorite has emerged from Rice's talented pitching trio. Wade Townsend made his case by pitching his first career complete game, a 1-0 win against San Jose State. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound junior held the Spartans hitless until there were two outs in the eighth inning, then finished off a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks. His .154 opponent average ranked second in the nation to Jered Weaver, and his ERA ranked fourth. Townsend also led Rice in strikeouts with nearly 11 per nine innings.
