Nevada freshman lefthander Steve Masten died Tuesday from a gunshot wound that police have said was self-inflicted.
Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office responded to a call to Masten's Spanish Springs home in suburban Reno on Monday, and found that he had been shot. Masten, 18, died a day later at Washoe Medical Center in Reno, and investigators determined he had shot himself.
"This has been extremely tough on all of us," Masten's mother Lisa told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "He had a bright future in any route he decided to take. It's an unfortunate thing that happened and we have to move on. We loved him dearly."
Nevada canceled its Tuesday game at St. Mary's, but will play its three-game Western Athletic Conference series at home against San Jose State this weekend. Funeral services for Masten are scheduled for Friday, but the family has asked the team to go on with its game as scheduled. Players and coaches will wear black wristbands for that series. Commemorative uniform patches have been ordered and should arrive next week.
"Steven was a wonderful student-athlete with a bright future," Nevada coach Gary Powers said. "He will be deeply missed by everyone in the Wolf Pack baseball family. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family."
Masten was 1-1, 6.75 in 12 innings this season. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder rated as Nevada's No. 13 prospect for the 2005 draft as a senior at Spanish Springs High. The state's 2005 northern region player of the year chose Nevada over UCLA, Pepperdine and Santa Clara.
