Aggies Don't Miss A Beat

College Weekend Wrapup by Will Kimmey
April 26, 2004

Texas A&M lost eight pitchers to the draft last year, including three second-round picks in righthanders Brian Finch, Scott Beerer and Logan Kensing.

That left plenty of openings in the weekend rotation. The Aggies filled one in August when junior lefthander Zach Jackson transferred in from Louisiville. Another was filled near midseason when pitching coach Jim Lawler moved redshirt freshman Jason Meyer to the rotation from the bullpen.

Meyer held Missouri without a run on seven hits as he struck out eight in his first career complete game Friday. Jackson followed by striking 11 Saturday as he allowed an earned run on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings. Meyer improved to 8-0, 1.27 on the season (four of those wins have come in relief, along with three saves) while Jackson moved to 8-3, 3.61.

"We're fortunate in that we have two No. 1s," Lawler said.

The two starters are an interesting contrast and have helped Texas A&M to a 33-12 record and No. 16 ranking.

"Meyer keeps them off balance by throwing 1/3 fastballs, 1/3 curveballs and 1/3 changeups," Lawler said. "He hasn't gone out to one of his starts for when he didn't have all three working.

"Zach throws his two-seam away and his four-seamer in. If he locates well, it's really ugly (for the hitters). They come up swinging against him because he's around the plate and comes after you. It's not a real guessing game like against Jason."

Lawler and coach Mark Johnson decided to have the 5-foot-9, 175-pound Meyer start on Fridays because his three-pitch mix of an 85-88 mph fastball, curveball and changeup throws off hitters looking for hard stuff in the series opener. He got his first start March 26 against Texas Tech. He has 71 strikeouts and 22 walks in 64 total innings this season.

Then the Aggies come back with Jackson, a 6-foot-5, 230-pounder who uses both a two- and four-seam fastball, topping out at 92. He also mixes in a slider and changeup. Jackson's size, stuff and command make him the better pro prospect, and he's an attractive choice for the draft's top three rounds, possibly as high as the end of the first. He's registered 71 strikeouts and 17 walks in 72 innings.

Mound Masterpieces

Rhode Island sophomore lefthander Zack Zuercher threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 St. Bonaventure batters in an 8-0 win. Zuercher, who spent his freshman season at North Carolina, leads the Atlantic-10 Conference in strikeouts (89), complete games (four), shutouts (three) opponents average (.156) and ERA (2.26).

• Division II Central Missouri State junior righthander Danny Powers racked up 12 strikeouts in a seven-inning no-hitter against Pittsburgh State.

• Senior righthander Mike Mlotkowski set an NAIA record by throwing his second no-hitter of the year for Oklahoma City against University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. He struck out nine in a 13-0 win. Mlotkowski began his college career at Florida before transferring to South Florida Community College.

• Senior righthander Steven Carter became the all-time wins leader for Coastal Carolina and the Big South Conference by notching his 37th victory in a 10-3 win against UNC-Asheville. He allowed two earned runs over 7 2/3 innings to pass former Chanticleer Scott Sturkie on both lists.

Penn State senior righthander Aaron Tressler threw a seven-inning one-hitter with a career-high nine strikeouts in a 3-0 win against Iowa.

Lamar pitchers Derrick Gordon, Scott Vander Weg and Chris Buechner combined on a one-hitter Sunday as the Cardinal topped Southeastern Louisiana 10-1 on Sunday. Lamar swept the three-game series to improve to 13-5 in the Southland Conference, good for first place by a game over 11-5 Northwestern State.

Gardner-Webb sophomore righthander Zac Ward has fired back-to-back seven-inning complete games in Atlantic Sun action, recording 23 strikeouts over 14 innings. Ward has not allowed an earned run in 17 innings.

Sultans of Swing

Washington junior first baseman Kyle Larsen became the third Husky to homer three times in one game with a trio of solo shots Sunday in a 12-11 win against Arizona in 10 innings.

Maryland senior Anthony Buffone became the school's all-time hits leader by collecting his 254th safety Friday in a 21-16 loss at Wake Forest. Buffone is called "Mini Jim Leyritz" for his versatility and has seen action at catcher, first base, second base, third base, left field and right field during his career. He's played in all 152 of Maryland's games since his sophomore season.

Around the Nation

Seton Hall senior third baseman/righthander Joey Scott went 4-for-4 with five RBIs and threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts Sunday in a 20-0, seven-inning win against Villanova.

South Carolina junior righthander Billy Buckner is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with mononucleosis. Buckner had compiled a 4-2, 3.32 record with 74 strikeouts in 60 innings as the Gamecocks' Friday starter this season after transferring in from Young Harris (Ga.) Junior College. He had positioned himself as a potential first-round pick and a likely candidate for the first three rounds.

Texas Tech tied a school and Big 12 record with 10 stolen bases in a 14-4 win Saturday against Oklahoma.

Georgia Tech sophomore righthander Micah Owings moved back into the weekend rotation Friday and earned his first win as a starter since Feb. 20. He hit his 13th home run of the season Sunday as the Yellow Jackets became the first team to sweep an Atlantic Coast Conference series at Florida State since the Seminoles joined the league in 1992.

Becker College (Leicester, Mass.) came back from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Thomas College (Waterville, Maine) 25-24 in a seven-inning game. Becker scored the winning run on a single with two outs and a 3-2 count in the bottom of the seventh. There was plenty of the line as the win gave Becker the North Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular season-title over Thomas, which is good for home-field advantage in the conference tournament. "It was like a 12-round Ali-Frazier type of game," Becker coach Walter Beede said.

Illinois coach Richard "Itch" Jones became the eighth active Division I coach and the 15th in NCAA history to reach 1,200 wins after getting a victory in game two of a Saturday doubleheader with Indiana.
