A True Pillaging

College Weekend Wrapup by Will Kimmey
April 19, 2004

East Carolina obviously packed all of its bats for a road trip to Cincinnati this weekend. The Pirates blasted a season-high 15 home runs in scoring 60 runs in the three-game sweep to stretch their winning streak to 12 games and improve to 31-6 overall. They moved into a first-place tie with Southern Mississippi at 12-3 in Conference USA play.

East Carolina also rose six spots in the Top 25 poll to No. 9, the school's second-highest ranking ever. The Pirates were ranked eighth on May 27, 2001, before finishing the season at No. 11.

This year's club leans on a stunningly potent offense that set school and conference records for runs (32), RBIs (32) and at-bats (58) in Saturday's 32-14 pounding of Cincinnati. East Carolina also tied a school record with 34 hits, seven of which came from senior center fielder Jamie Page. His seven hits (in eight at-bats) and four doubles each established new Pirates records.

Page went 10-for-17 in the series, but sophomore second baseman Trevor Lawhorn trumped his performance. Lawhorn hit three home runs on the weekend to bring his season total to 18, which is tied for first in the nation along with New Mexico State senior first baseman Billy Becher. Lawhorn didn't actually homer in the 32-14 game, but he hit two in a 15-13 victory the night before to cap a span of nine home runs in nine games. He hit his 18th home run in Sunday's 13-7 win. Lawhorn had a streak of six straight games with a homer thwarted in the first game of an April 10 doubleheader against South Florida, but he went deep in the nightcap.

Senior DH Ryan Jones, playing with a torn elbow ligament, is tied for fifth nationally with 15 homers, and juniors Darryl Lawhorn (Trevor's twin brother) and Ryan Norwood each have nine. Jones, who went 6-for-7 in Saturday's blowout, also leads the nation with a .991 slugging percentage and a 1.502 on-base plus slugging percentage. Lawhorn and Jones rank third and fourth, respectively, in total bases.

Mound Masterpieces

• Duke junior lefthander Tim Layden fired the school's first no-hitter since 1991 in a 12-strikeout performance Tuesday against Old Dominion on Tuesday.

• New Orleans junior righthander Thomas Diamond took his explosive arsenal of pitches to New Mexico State's launching pad and emerged nearly unscathed--aside from the pitch count he rang up (150). Diamond struck out 12 batters in seven innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out Becher his first three times to the plate, and the Privateers won, 6-4.

St. Anselm junior lefthander Parrish Castor struck out a school record 20 American International batters Monday in a 6-2 win. He became the sixth player in Division II history to record 20 or more strikeouts in a game.

• Division III The Apprentice School of Newport News, Va., racked up its third no-hitter in 10 days as senior righthander Travis Cobb struck out 13 Christendom batters, including the first nine of the game, over five innings in a 21-0 win. Sophomore righthander Ben Jones struck out nine batters to set the school's single-season record at 98 in the first game of that doubleheader, a 19-2 win. The Builders recorded no-hitters in both games of a doubleheader last week.

• Don't expect to get many hits when Columbia-Greene Junior College pops up on your schedule. The Division III team based in Hudson, N.Y., pitched four seven-inning no-hitters in its first 25 games, compiling a 19-6 record. Freshman lefthander Mike Acker, sophomore lefthander Tom Peterson and sophomore righthander Ken Wood have each thrown one apiece, while Acker (four innings), sophomore righthander Dan Sausville (two) and freshman righthander Ryan Stringham (one) combined on the other no-no. Sausville also pitched one of Columbia-Greene's two one-hitters on the year.

"It's amazing," said coach Bob Godlewski, who also serves as an associate scout for the Devil Rays. "I've just never seen anything like this before."

Sultans of Swat

• George Mason senior third baseman Nick Shimer hit three home runs in a 10-3 win against Hofstra on Friday.

New Mexico hit a Mountain West Conference record eight home runs in an 18-6 win against Air Force on Sunday. A.J. Spitaleri and Joe Salas hit two home runs each.

Binghamton senior third baseman Jay Balback hit five home runs this week to set a new school record with 22 career homers.

Around The Nation

• Washington State junior righthander Bryce Chamberlin could miss the remainder of the season after his jaw was broken in an incident outside his off-campus residence early Friday morning. Chamberlin, who is 6-1, 5.18 with 56 strikeouts in 49 innings this season, had been the Cougars' No. 2 starter this season. Police are still investigating the incident, which coach Tim Mooney said involved Chamberlin trying to break up an argument. "This is obviously a blow for our team, but we are more concerned about Bryce and his recovery," coach Tim Mooney said. "Bryce was having the best season of his Cougars career and it would be a real shame if he is not able to pitch again this season."

• The R-rated box score of the weekend again comes from Georgia Tech's 16-2 loss to Washington on Sunday. Yellow Jackets sophomore righthander Jason Neighborgall worked 1/3 of an inning, allowing five earned runs but no hits. He continued to struggle with his control, issuing seven walks and two wild pitches while throwing just nine of his 38 pitches for strikes. Neighborgall, who looked like a potential first-round pick in 2005 after his performance in the Cape Cod League last summer, pushes 100 mph on the radar gun but has been beset with control problems all year. Neighborgall is 0-1, 27.00 in 5 2/3 innings. He's allowed just four hits and recorded nine strikeouts, but has walked 22 batters, hit two more and thrown nine wild pitches in allowing 17 runs--all earned.

Dallas Baptist can't qualify for postseason play this year because it's in a transition from Division II to Division I, but still the Patriots are 35-9 and have won 11 straight. Five of those 11 came against No. 13 Oklahoma, a scrappy Texas State team and a three-game sweep at Florida International this weekend. Dallas Baptist can participate in postseason play beginning in 2006, but its games do count toward the RPI this year.
