Moderator: Prospect maven Josh Boyd will begin taking your questions at 3:00 pm ET
| Q: |
Lonely Fan from Montreal asks: What were the Montreal Expos thinking when they chose Clint Everts ahead of Zack Greinke, Cole Hamels, and Scott Kazmir? They have had the worse record for drafting pitchers in recent baseball history. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Do you guys ever think about what song you would walk up to the plate to? I do. I warmed up for my chat today by listening to Slipknot, but I'll try not to let that anger come out in my responses...
Ok, enough of that, let's get going. I'm still riding high from the Futures Game, what a tremendous event. Josh Boyd: Hey Lonely Fan, I wouldn't slam the Expos right now, because I don't think their choice was going out on a limb last year. Everts was as highly regarded as most. We never heard the talk on Greinke that he was THIS good until after he signed and got to Puerto Rico. Don't give up on Everts, he was one of the youngest players drafted last year and has puer stuff better than Greinke's--not saying he's better though. |
| Q: |
Jason from Scottsdale asks: How does Adriano Rosario compare to other young fireballers such as the Angel's Santana. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The scouts I've talked to about Rosario wouldn't have him rated anywhere near Santana. Santana has more than just velocity, which is the main thing Rosario has going for him now. Santana has a power slider to go with his 97 mph gas, he throws strikes and he has a good idea on how to set up hitters.
|
| Q: |
Snapper Bean from Greater Kensington asks: Has any franchise added less amateur talent this season than the Phillies? Despite not having 1st or 2nd round draft choices, the Phillies drafted very conservatively and still have been unable to sign their 4th (Michael Bourn), 6th (Jordan Parraz), 11th (Myron Leslie) and 18th (Rob Johnson) round selections. What's a sincere Phillies fan to do about an organization that seems to think its good enough to stop adding talent? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I'll trust Mike Arbuckle and his crew on this one. Bourn should get done, but Parazz and Johnson, who is playing well in the Cape, will be tough signs. They also are following late-rounders who slid like Blair Erickson, Ryan Tabor, Mike Crotta and Greg Reynolds, who would help compensate for their lack of first and second-rounders. I really don't think they believe they are good enough to not add talent, and we probably won't hear about the Latin talent they bring in for a couple years. |
| Q: |
Jason from Scottsdale asks: Has Scott Hairston's star dropped dramatically? What's a better comparison for him? Marcus Giles or Jeff Kent since I believe Kent is a much better hitter than Giles. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I wouldn't say that it has because he was injured and tried to play through it. Let's take another look after the second half. I expect him to put up numbers in between Giles and Kent's in the future. the only question scouts have is where he'll end up defensively. |
| Q: |
Brandon from Philly asks: Where does Cole Hamels stand in the race for minor league player of the year? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Another half pitching like that and it will be hard to deny him... |
| Q: |
Kris from Burlington asks: Who is the early favorite from this years draft to reach the big leagues first??
Thanks |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Ryan Wagner is already in Triple-A and could be up in Cincy before September. His moving fastball has been impressing the Reds brass as much as his filthy slide piece. |
| Q: |
Ted from Hockessin, DE asks: Josh,
With injuries this season to Guzman, Haggerty, Brownlie, and Beltran, along with the future uncertainty of a position for Kelton, and the slow development of Bobby Hill, do you believe the Cubs still have a top 5 farm system? Thanks. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Wow, how discouraging has that rash of injuries been to the Cubs? I think you could still make a case for them as one of the top five strongest systems though there are several sneaking up from behind. Check out the Diamondbacks feature online today for a look at five organizations on the way up and three on the decline. |
| Q: |
Jay from Madison asks: Perhaps I am delusional, after a decade long drought, the O's seem to have a few hitting prospects. What do you think of Majewski, Cliffords, Huggins, etc. And Riley, Maine, R. Lewis and Loewen have promise on the hill. Is this team on the way up? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The Orioles are definitely on the move, heading the right direction. They've been one of the least productive over the last couple years, but there is a lot more to like now with the players you mentioned, plus Nick Markakis, Scott Rice, Tripper Johnson, Dave Crouthers and a sleeper to watch for Brian Forystek. |
| Q: |
Zach from Pittsburgh asks: What kind of offer do you think it will take to get Brian Giles out of Pittsburgh? Would the Padres be willing to do a Xavier Nady, Josh Barfield, and Tagg Bozied swap for the most underrated player in baseball? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The Pirates are, for the first time under Littlefield's regime, willing to discuss Giles with teams. However, he is asking for a ton, as he should. I don't think the Padres would make that move, however. Is Giles really still considered that underrated now that everyone's been writing about him being underrated for years? He was certainly underrated coming up through the Indians system, but after finishing among the top three in OPS last year, who isn't paying attention to him yet? |
| Q: |
tim thomas from staten island, ny asks: Melky Cabrera from the staten island yankees nobody talks about him he hit 335avg last year in the d.s.l with a great o.b.p he started off slow this year for staten island but is now starting to heat up he already had 2 five hit games this season to get his avg above 300avg and has the same amount of walks as strike outs and he's a swich hitter and he's only 18 years old i know evereyone talks abot rudy guillen but this kid will be special i seen him play 3 times already and evereyone keep saying the yankes have no prospects anyway please let me know what you have heard about Melky Cabrera and what do you think of him? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: We started hearing about Melky, great name, last offseason coming out of the DSL, just as we did the year before with Ferdin Tejeda, who can't shake the injury bug. Still don't have a ton of reports in on Cabrera yet, but what we have heard is he's an exciting toolsy player worth watching. The Yankees system is going to stay afloat thanks to the tremendous work of their Latin scouts. |
| Q: |
Brandon from Philadelphia asks: Who do you think are the 5 best pitching prospects in baseball? Greinke,Floyd,Hamels,Kazmir,Harden? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: That group is hard to argue with, since Harden has been promoted to Oakland, I will add a fifth name to that mix: Edwin Jackson. Not sure if that is a surprise or a sleeper to people, but he has a chance to be real special. It's too bad everyone didn't get to see him throw in the Futures Game. |
| Q: |
Time wasting maven from Houston, Texas asks: Jeff Francis' season seems to have been a tale of two halves. What do you think of Jeff and his development this season? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: As we thought before the draft last year, Francis is a middle to back of the rotation solid lefthanded starting pitching prospect. His struggles early on were because of his fastball command, and after he got back to throwing strikes, which was his forte as an amatuer, he's been more effective. |
| Q: |
Louis from Saylor, Idaho asks: I see that Bobby Jenks is back from the DL. Do the Angels still really hold out hope that he'll develop into a frontline starter, or is he doomed to be the next Steve Dalkowski? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: There is always reason to hold hope for the best, even in Jenkity Jenks' case. I think a lot of it's up to him, though. The Angels understand the risk level is high, but the reward is higher, so they will continue to give him every chance to succeed as a starter. |
| Q: |
mc Berg from McClinton, Maryland asks: What are the early feelings on Denard Span down in the Appy League? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The early results have been encouraging. Span has worked hard for the Twins since getting to instructional league last fall. He knows he needs to address the things crucial to his success as a leadoff man, and he's made strides in those areas. He still needs to improve in the outfield, taking better routes and making accurate throws, etc. |
| Q: |
jason luke from north carolina asks: THE YANKEES HAD SCOUTS IN ATLANTA WATCHING (DANIEL BARD) WITH THE JUNIOR NATIONAL TEAM THEY ARE ACTUALLY FOLLOWING HIM AROUND AND BARD IS YET TO TURN THEM DOWN FROM WHAT IVE READ SO DO YOU THINK THE YANKEES WILL GET HIM TO SIGN AND OFFER HIM THE MONEY AN |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: AS I MENTIONED WITH THE PHILLIES, the Yankees are following Bard throughout the summer with the intentions of making a run at him. Expect the Yankees to make some noise with their unsigned picks, though. They've already given 6th rounder jason Stephens $500K. |
| Q: |
Kris from Burlington, Canada asks: Everyone talks about Moneyball but the only A's prospects from last years draft who look like future big leaguers seem to be Blanton and Swisher and neither look like stars. What are you thoughts?
Thanks |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: That is just one of the many points that Michael Lewis' misses in his book. He was so busy promoting those guys as the real best players available. You are right on, though. You can still make a case for other guys like Bill Murphy, Shane Komine, Jeremy Brown and Mark Teahen, you just have to wonder about the impact they will produce. |
| Q: |
Roy Wilson from McLean, VA asks: Do the Padres have shortstop Khalil Greene slated as a starter in 2004 and is Jason Bay projected as a starter or reserve outfielder? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Greene is forcing them to consider that option, and they are talking more and more about how good his defense is which leads me to believe they are preparing him for that possibility. He might get a prep course this Sept. Bay projects as a starter, for me. |
| Q: |
Kris from Canada asks: Ervin Santana or Bobby Jenks?? Who hits the show first and who is better?
|
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Santana. His stuff is comprable, and he has better command and pitchability. |
| Q: |
Jon from Tor asks: How good is Brandon League? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Very good. I saw him recently throwing 96 mph with explosive two-seam life, to go with a hard sweeping slider. I think he might pitch around the strike zone a little too much and he needs to make hitters chase more often. |
| Q: |
G-Money from Cincinnati asks: With the trade of A. Gonzales, it appears J. Stokes is the future Marlins first baseman. His stats this year are only mediocre, though. What's his timetable, and do you expect him to mash in the majors? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Just keep in mind that Stokes' season was affected by offseason wrist surgery, which shouldn't eve be underestimated. It often takes hitters a good half season to feel like they can drive the ball with any power again after a wrist problem. Stokes will mash at every level, he'll hit 40-plus bombs in the bigs someday, and probably strike out a lot. |
| Q: |
sal from oakland asks: On the eve of the Rich Harden Era beginning, who is a worthy comp for his talents? One of the big three or someone like Mark Prior? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I don't think Prior is a good one because of several factors: Size--advantage Prior. Delivery-mechanics--advantage Prior. Command-control--advantage Prior. Harden is going to be good, though. He has more velocity, he has a good breaking ball, he has a good splitter. Physically he is built along the lines of Tim Hudson, and though he throws harder than Hudson I think that is a fitting comp. |
| Q: |
Bill from Ny asks: WHAT happened to Mark Phillips? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Command, command, command. As command goes, so do pitching prospects. his delivery has long been a concern, and it seems to be leading to problems this year. You also have to wonder about a guy who is deemed a slow starter and always had issues coming to camp out of shape. |
| Q: |
Charles Berg from Houston, Texas asks: I watched Justin Gillman pitch for the GCL Reds and he shut down the Twins. Where do you see him ending up next year and is he fully recovered from Tommy John? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: He should reach high Class A next year, and I think it's safe to say that he wouldn't be pitching right now if the Reds didn;t feel he was fully recovered from TJ. |
| Q: |
Josh Meyer from Palmer, IA asks: Do you think Joe Mauer is the best prospect in the game and will he develop into a power hitter? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Yes and yes. I think average power would be a safe projection with the chance to hit for more than 20 bombs because of his advanced hitting approach, bat speed, leverage and strength. |
| Q: |
dan from sacramento asks: By greatly improving his control, Matt Peterson appears to have upped his status. What kind of player do you thik he'll be? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: That was Peterson's biggest problem in his first two years and he started to come around in that sense last season. The progress he's made is pretty encouraging. With a couple of future plus pitches, he could be a solid middle of the rotation guy in the future. |
| Q: |
Tim from Binghamton, NY asks: Do you see Brandon Phillips still becoming a very good middle infielder? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Yes. Phillips has been among the youngest players in his league each step he made on the way to the majors. I was surprised by his extended struggles, but there is still reason to believe he will hit in the majors and provide solid defense and baserunning. |
| Q: |
Kirk Peters from Pittsburgh asks: Do you have any insight as to how the Pirate's view Chris Shelton? I realize he is old for the Carolina League, but his offensive numbers are overwhelming. He may win the triple crown while leading the league in SLG% and OB%. In media interviews with Pirate's brass, however, he is rarely mentioned. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I'm surprised the Bucs aren't hyping him a little more, but he is the type of guy who is going to have to prove himself at every level. He wasn't a high draft and he isn't a toolsy prospect. He is like a compact version of Craig Wilson, but he can rake. Defense will be a question. |
| Q: |
Johan from Florida asks: Last year, you rated Jeremy Heremida as the top HS hitting prospect. Any update on his professional start? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Hermida has been hot lately and looks to be every bit the hitter scouts projected last year. he is a prototype right fielder with a powerful lefthanded hitting stroke. He plays a solid right field. |
| Q: |
Rich from Chicago asks: Josh-
Has Jeremy Reed passed Joe Borchard in the Sox' eyes? Is .300-15-80-30 with a good batting eye a realistic stats line? What do you think? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I've heard Mark Kotsay comparisons for Reed, and I think it would be fair to say that Kotsay at his best was a pretty solid big leaguer, which is what scouts in So. Cal expected last June before the draft. Long Beach State's Blair Field suppressed his numbers a little bit, but one scout I talked to recently said he stopped doubting Reed's power when he hit a ball out of Blair Field to the opposite field last year. I don't think there is any question Reed has passed Borchard, but I don't think the White Sox would tell you that yet. |
| Q: |
Peter from Akron asks: Josh, whats your take on a couple of young latin hurlers in the Indians system who have performed veruy well this season, Mariano Gomez and Fausto Carmona, Tribe asst. GM Neil Huntingdon was raving about them in the paper this week - What kind of upside do they have ? Thanks |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Two more impressive arms for the Tribe. They just keep bringing them, don't forget about underrated Fernando Cabrera in Double-A Akron. Gomez is going tonight against John Maine in Kinston, and Gomez has continued to rise since establishing himself last year. He has a live left arm and a solid breaking ball. I like Carmona a lot, too. I provided a full report on him earlier this year in the Daily Dish, check the archives if you wish. The Indians were very excited about him this spring, and he has made good on their expectations.
Josh Boyd: This just in: J.D. Martin might be out for the season with an elbow injury. |
| Q: |
Mike K from Exton, PA asks: Chadd Spann made the BA mid-season All Star team, but there hasn't been a lot buzz around his very good year. How does he compare to other young 3B like the Mets David Wright? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: SoSH is in the house, watch out. That's a good comp question. I am a little surprised at Wright's struggles this year, after a hot start I might add. Spann has a good grasp on the strike zone, especially for a guy just a year out of high school in the pitching-dominated SAL. Wright might have more raw power, though, he also strikes out more frequently and I wonder if he could be exposed against better pitching. I'm also not sure how much faith we should have in the Mets player development staff when it comes to developing hitters.
|
| Q: |
Chris Young from Montreal-San Juan asks: Why don't I get more love from the scouts? I'm 6'-10" with a KIP ratio near 1. Yeah, I'm 24 in AA, but still... |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The main reason Young hasn't been a scout's favorite is because he doesn't show the ability to consistently spin the breaking ball and despite his size, he's not overpowering. He has good command, though, so we'll see what happens in the upper levels. |
| Q: |
Kyle from Fontana, CA asks: How would you rank new Mets Victor Diaz and Royce Ring? Would they be in the top 10? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I think you'd have to start that list with Kazmir, especially now that Reyes and Heilman are in the big leagues, and you've got Brazell, Wright, Peterson, Huber, Keppel, Duncan, as definite top 10 material. That's seven, so Ring and Diaz would fit in their for me at this point, and that's without digging too deep. Kevin Deaton is on the verge of that territoty too. |
| Q: |
Ron Day from Chatham, Ontario asks: Zack Greinke's pre-Futues Game quote led me to believe that he's capable of throwing in the mid-90's, but that he understands that dialing down the fastball in order to take advantage of superior movement can be a better route to success. How rare is it to find a young pitcher who grasps that concept and can put it into practice. Could you profile Greinke's pitch repertoire for me? Thanks. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Great question Ron! Well, at least I hope it is, because I posed that same question to several scouts at the game, and as I suspected, it is very rare. Greinke topped out at 95 mph in high school, and he's been getting it up to 93-94 at times this year. He also throws a good slider and changeup with a usable curveball. He'll eventually scrap one of the breaking balls and probably pitch with his slider. |
| Q: |
Greg from LA asks: Any chance the Dodgers become sellers rather than buyers? Their AAA club is devoid of talent, their AA club has a couple of good pitchers, and all the rest of their talent is A and below. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I don't see them doing that this year, maybe in the offseason. But there is too much pressure to win right now. |
| Q: |
John from Maryland asks: Does Merkin Valdez project as a top of the rotation starter or is his potential slightly overhyped? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: The thing you have to remember about projecting Merkin is that he is one year removed from the GCL and just a few years removed from signing as a scrawny 83-85 mph thrower. He has a great body, long and rangy, with above-average stuff. I'd hesitate to call him a frontline pitching prospect, but depending on his health and the way he progresses over the next few years, I think it's fair to call him a mid-rotation big league starter |
| Q: |
DERECK ROSE from BOSTON asks: REDSOX FARM SYSTEM VS YANKEES FARM SYSTEM WHICH ONE WOULD YOU TAKE FROM THE LOW MINORS(DOMINCAN SUMMER LEAGUE)ON UP TO THE TOP? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I'M GOING TO ANSWER THESE NEXT TWO QUESTIONS AND HOPE TO NOT GET IN TROUBLE WITH THE SONS OF SAM HORN AND THE REST OF THE RED SOX NATION, BUT... I would still give the slight advantage to the Yankees, and I will keep deferring to their Latin efforts, and pin their hopes on the likes of Cano, Tejeda, Guillen, Valdez, etc. |
| Q: |
Kris from asks: The Yankees farm system looks pretty weak beyond Claussen and Cano. Seems that most of their other prospects are more hype than substance is this true and are dark days ahead for their system? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: See above. You're right, it's not a pretty picture because you have to do a lot of dreaming with their system since you have to dig into the lower levels to find their most promising guys. Some of them will pan out and some won't. Brandon Claussen's return is an obvious spark for the organization. Wang has been solid this year, jumping from short-season to Double-A. |
| Q: |
Jeff from Rancho Relaxo asks: Josh-
When can we expect the next installment of position rankings? The catcher lists were terrific, one of the best features BA has put on the website in a long time. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Thanks a lot Jeff. I have fun working on those too, and I was working on finishing up the first base prospects this week before computer problems temporarily delayed my progress. Look for those next week... |
| Q: |
bill from beantown asks: do expect anyone to consider trading with oakland other than boston or toronto after beane wrote moneyball? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Yes. I think there are very few, if any, GMs who would cut off all ties with Beane. |
| Q: |
Jim Goulart from Assonet, MA asks: Prince Fielder -- Minor League Player of the Year Candidate? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: He's getting there, and it will take a ton of bombs for a low Class A prospect to win the award. Only Andruw Jones has won the award spending the whole year in low Class A. Gregg Jefferies and Tom Gordon are the only other two who have started the year at that level. |
| Q: |
Michael from Chicago asks: Do the Cubs still see Luis Montanez as a starting middle infielder of the future.. or has his star dimmed some over the past year? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Going to try to speed this up with a lightning round for y'all:
Montanez, certainly dimming, quickly.
|
| Q: |
punchy from NYC asks: hey josh, i know weve all heard of Kaz Matsui by now and ive just recently picked up on SEUNG-YEOP LEE, a super slugger from Korea, who seems like he might be in the majors next year. Any one else we should knwo about? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Kangi Jogima, according to J.J. Cooper. |
| Q: |
Josh Meyer from Palmer, IA asks: How good are Twins pitching prospects JD Durbin and Jesse Crain? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Very good. Durbin is one of the few legitimate starting pitching prospects in their system, loaded with strong-armed relievers a la Crain, who is the best of that group. |
| Q: |
Jays Fan from Toronto asks: Who most impressed you at the futures game and how about my man Alex Rios taking Nageottoe deep! |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: That was impressive. If I took one away from there it would be Gavin Floyd. |
| Q: |
Jim Goulart from brewerfan.net asks: Where was the love for AA Huntsville in BA's recent discussion of the most prospect-laden minor league squads? J.J. Hardy, David Krynzel, Corey Hart, Mike Jones, Ben Hendrickson, Luis Martinez, Pedro Liriano -- and a nice group of supporting players like Noochie Varner, Daryl Clark, Alejandro Machado -- have I made my point yet? Thanks! |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: You're right on. I think we've been promoting that group all year long though. |
| Q: |
John from Philadelphia asks: Who has the highest ceiling of these pitchers:
Angel Guzman, Sean Burnett, John VanB, or Cole Hamels?
|
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Hamels.
|
| Q: |
Mike from Toronto asks: While he has doubtless proven himself a great hitting evaluator, given the arms in the Jays minor league system, can it be said that J.P. Ricciardi knows pitching? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Well, let's see, how many of those arms were in the system before JP got there? Most. Also, his scouts, led by director Chris Buckley, deserve as much credit or more than any for the arms they've brought in the last two drafts. |
| Q: |
Will from Durham asks: Have you ever heard the beginning of "Motherless Children" by Eric Clapton? That would be awesome to hear over the PA as you strode to the plate, and people would be like, "What the heck is that?" Also, anything from the White Stripes' new album would be cool. Or how about one of Liz Phair's new tunes? Have you ever noticed that no one ever comes to the plate with a song by a female artist? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Would any of that music really get you jacked up enough to face a 96 mph boring fastball??? |
| Q: |
Dave from Savannah, GA asks: Wes Bankston or Jeff Francoeur? They both have tremendous potential, and are having decent seasons in the SAL. Who do you see as the better major leaguer? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Francouer. |
| Q: |
Aaron from Thorold,Ontario, Canada asks: Hey Josh,
Who will be better in your opinion Andy Sisco or Angel Guzman?
Thanks |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Guzman. |
| Q: |
Ben from Arizona asks: What's the latest on the top four picks being signed? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Not much. Look for Jim Callis' latest draft notebook to be coming soon on that topic. |
| Q: |
dodgerfan from corona asks: Thanks for your time. Is there reason to worry about Jonathon Figueroa's poor start? Is his arm problems contributing to his poor season or is he just rusty?
|
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: I think there is plenty of reason for concern. His mechanics have been adjusted, so we'll have to see how he responds to that in the second half. I'm worried, though. |
| Q: |
Nathan from Buffalo,ny asks: with the way Jeremy Guthrie is pitching in Buffalo will his timetable to the show be slowed down or is he still on pace to be called up in September? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: We've heard he might be headed back to Double-A. |
| Q: |
Mike Marinaro from Tampa, FL asks: Josh,
Slipknot and a venti cup of Starbucks, and we are all road raging (sugar or no sugar). Quick Q: What is going to happen to Foppert now that he has been demoted? Do you think his lack of velocity is due to unknown armshoulder injuries? Those radars used to reach 97, with 92 regularly. In the majors, he sat in the 88 range. Throw some Radiohead on and space out indefinitley... |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: It's tough to explain the velocity. I've seen the low to mid-90s with my own eyes, and they've told me about the 99s in the past. He could have a tired arm, let's just hope for no major injuries. |
| Q: |
Chief Wahoo from Jacobs Field, Cleveland, OH asks: How would you rate the Indians '03 Draft (Excellent, Very Good, Solid, etc. etc.)? Can guys like Aubrey, Snyder, and Garko be productive bats? Thanks, you're the man. |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: It was one of the best. |
| Q: |
Nathan from Buffalo asks: Do you think Royce Ring will be closing in April next year for the mets? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: No. |
| Q: |
Skinny Pete from TX asks: Jose Dominguez has been lighting it up for Stockton and Frisco this year.
What's the outlook on him? What tier prospect is he? And is he really just 20 years old? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Above-average prospect with a live arm and a plus-plus changeup. |
| Q: |
Josh from Long Island asks: What do you think of Alexis Rios' recent lack of plate discipline? Is he getting lucky, or is he finally tapping his talent? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: No luck involved. He's an aggressive hitter with tremendous hand-eye discipline. |
| Q: |
Scott from Homer glen IL. asks: I think it was an awesome pick for the cubs to take Ryan Harvey at #6 this year. When will he be starting low class A ball? |
 |
| A: |
Josh Boyd: Next April. |
Moderator: Lots of questions still on the board, but I've got to get back to writing here. Thank you so much for your participation today, it was an overwhelming response, and much appreciated.
