Mesa 3, Surprise 2

Brad Snyder's RBI single in the seventh inning helped the Mesa Solar Sox defeat the visiting Surprise Scorpions on Monday night.

With the score tied, 2-2, in the seventh inning against Royals righthanded reliever Chris Demaria (1-2), Kevin Howard (Reds) worked a one-out walk and Kevin Frandsen (Giants) singled. Snyder (Indians) plated Howard with a single to right field as Mesa moved within one game of first-place Surprise in the AFL American Division.

Solar Sox reliever John Koronka (Cubs) hurled the final three frames in scoreless fashion, allowing two hits with one strikeout and a walk.

Mesa took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Snyder and Ryan Garko (Indians). Josh Anderson (Astros) tied the score with a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Brian Burres (Giants) started for the Solar Sox and gave up three hits, two walks and fanned two over five scoreless innings.

Charlton Jimerson (Astros) led the Scorpions with three hits.

Grand Canyon 6, Peoria Saguaros 3

Righthander Nic Ungs and three Rafters relievers shut down the heart of the Saguaros order as Grand Canyon defeated Peoria on Monday.

Ungs (Marlins) was solid through five innings, allowing three runs on five hits. The Dubuque, Iowa native also struck out two and did not give up a walk.

The bullpen was even tougher on the Peoria lineup as three relievers combined to toss four no-hit innings. Logan Kensing (Marlins) pitched in the sixth, Ricky Barrett (Twins) tossed a perfect seventh and Taylor Tankersley (Marlins) was on the mound for the eighth and ninth innings for the save.

All four pitchers stymied the Saguaros lineup as the No. 3-7 batters were hitless for the game.

Grand Canyon was down 3-2, going into the bottom of the fourth when it touched up Matt Peterson (Pirates) for three runs. Matt Moses (Twins) and Robert Andino (Marlins) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, then scored on a single and a sacrifice fly by Rangers farmhands Drew Meyer and Mike Nikeas respectively.

Peoria scored all three of their runs in the third inning, two of them coming on a double by Brendan Harris (Nationals) to right. Peterson (0-4) took the loss as he allowed five runs on six hits and two walks over 3 1/3 innings.

Phoenix 10, Peoria Javelinas 3

Dodgers prospects Matt Kemp and James Loney hounded the Javelinas pitching staff as the Phoenix Desert Dogs knocked off Peoria on Monday.
Kemp provided a spark from atop the Desert Dogs order, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, a stolen base and a walk. Loney drove in a game-high three RBIs from the third spot in the lineup, including two with a single during Phoenix's six-run eighth inning.

Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks) was also solid as he went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored, a steal and a walk. Andy LaRoche (Dodgers) went hitless in the game, but still helped at the plate by walking twice, scoring once and driving in another.

Athletics righthander Shane Komine (1-1) out dueled AFL ERA leader lefthander Adam Loewen (Orioles) for the win as he tossed five shutout innings against Peoria, limiting them to three hits and a walk while striking out one.

Loewen (2-1) allowed a run to score against him for only the second time this year and went five full innings, surrendering six hits and three walks while striking out five. Orioles prospects Nick Markakis and Val Majewski got the Javelinas on the board with home runs.
