2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 29

Edited by Chris Kline
October 30, 2005

Peoria Saguaros 4, Grand Canyon 3

Blue Jays prospect Adam Lind's three-run homer lifted the Peoria Saguaros past the Grand Canyon Rafters on Saturday afternoon at the Peoria Sports Complex.

With the Saguaros trailing, 2-1, David Murphy (Red Sox) led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and moved to third base on a one-out single by Larry Broadway (Nationals). Two batters later, Lind slugged his first AFL homer to put his team on top, 4-2.

Five of the game's 14 hits were home runs. Broadway put the Saguaros on the board in the fourth with a solo shot.

Bronson Sardinha (Yankees), Eric Duncan (Yankees) and Andy Wilson (Mets) each hit a solo homer in the losing cause. Denard Span (Twins) enjoyed a perfect day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and a walk for Grand Canyon.

Pirates righthander Landon Jacobsen (1-1) picked up the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of David Maust (Nationals), who surrendered two runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings.

Rafters righthander Steven White (Yankees) worked five solid frames but had to settle for a no-decision. The 24-year-old allowed one run on two hits while walking one and striking out three.

Twins righthander Travis Bowyer (0-2) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in two innings. He fanned three and did not walk a batter.

Phoenix 7, Peoria Javelinas 2

Righthander Jamie Shields (Devil Rays) held Peoria hitless into the fifth inning as the Desert Dogs defeated the Javelinas on Saturday afternoon at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Shields allowed two singles and struck out six without issuing a walk over six scoreless innings. Shields (2-1) leads the league with 25 innings pitched and has walked just two in five starts.

Matt Lynch (A's) recorded the last four outs for his first save.

Tony Abreu helped Phoenix build a 3-0 lead by the sixth inning. The Dodgers prospect crushed a solo homer in the third, scored on an RBI double by Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks) in the fourth and drove in Andy LaRoche (Dodgers) with a sacrifice fly in the sixth. LaRoche went 4-for-4 to raise his average to .375.

Tripper Johnson (Orioles) got the Javelinas to within 3-2 with a two-run homer in the seventh. But the Desert Dogs broke the game open with four runs in the eighth when Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Braves) doubled in a run ahead of RBI triples by Alex Frazier (Diamondbacks) and Matt Kemp (Dodgers).

Jonathan Asahina (Rockies) allowed six scattered hits over five innings while fanning one, but allowed two runs to take the loss.

Surprise 4, Mesa 2

You can only keep the Surprise Scorpions down for so long.

Held without a hit for five innings by righthander Angel Guzman (Cubs), the Scorpions rallied against the Mesa bullpen and pulled out a victory over the Solar Sox on Saturday.

Guzman allowed just three walks while striking out three. In his last two starts, the 23-year-old righthander has given up one run on four hits over 10 innings to lower his ERA to 3.92.

Surprise, which is at or near the top in most AFL offensive categories, pounced on relievers Travis Foley (Indians) and Brian Wilson (Giants). In the bottom of the sixth, Wade Robinson (Astros) greeted Foley with an infield hit, stole second and scored on a ground-rule double by Josh Anderson (Astros) to get the Scorpions within 2-1.

Howie Kendrick (Angels) also doubled, but Anderson held at third before scoring the tying run on a base hit by Billy Butler (Royals).

Wilson (1-2) replaced Foley to start the seventh but gave up a single to Corey Smith (Padres) and a double to Charlton Jimerson (Astros).

Gabe Johnson (Cardinals) broke the deadlock with a sacrifice fly and Robinson followed with a fly ball to center field that was deep enough to score Jimerson with an insurance run.

The rally made a winner of Cardinals prospect Cory Doyne (1-1), who worked around a hit and a walk by striking out two in the seventh. Righthander Brian Sanches (Phillies) yielded just one hit in two scoreless innings for his first save.

Chris Denorfia (Reds) and Matt Murton (Cubs) each had two hits and scored a run for the Solar Sox, who fell two games behind the first-place Scorpions in the American Division. Surprise has won two of three following a five-game losing streak.
