2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 19

Edited by Chris Kline
October 19, 2005

Peoria 3, Phoenix 1

The Peoria Javelinas came within two outs of the Arizona Fall League's first no-hitter in 2005 on Wednesday, but lost it in a pinch.

Dodgers’ first baseman James Loney broke it up with a pinch-hit, one-out homer in the ninth, but Peoria was able to hold on to beat the Desert Dogs at the Peoria Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Orioles lefthander Adam Loewen (1-0) pitched five strong innings, striking out six, walking two and got Jarrod Saltalamacchia (Braves) to bounce into an inning-ending double play in the first. The fourth-overall pick in 2002 also finished his night strong, retiring the last 12 batters he faced.

Relievers Ramon Ramirez (Rockies), Andy Mitchell (Orioles) and Rusty Tucker (Padres) each helped keep Phoenix hitless through the next three innings before giving way to Brian Wolfe (Brewers) in the ninth. After Tony Abreu (Dodgers) made the first out of the inning, Loney stepped in for leadoff man Josh Burrus (Braves) and hit the first pitch he saw from Wolfe over the right field fence, ending both the no-hitter and shutout.

The Javelinas grabbed the lead back in the third inning when Adam Jones (Mariners) drew a two-out walk and advanced on a balk from Desert Dogs righthander Jamie Shields (Devil Rays). Corey Hart (Brewers) brought Jones home in the next at-bat with a line drive single to left. Peoria tacked on two more insurances runs in the sixth on an RBI ground out from Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) and an RBI single by Nick Markakis (Orioles).

Shields (1-1) pitched effectively despite getting tagged with the loss, tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Saltalamacchia earned the other Phoenix hit with a two-out bloop single in the ninth.

Grand Canyon 5, Peoria Saguaros 4

Bronson Sardinha singled home Reggie Abercrombie with the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Grand Canyon Rafters defeated the Peoria Saguaros on Wednesday night in Surprise.

Abercrombie (Dodgers) led off the inning with a triple off righthander Roy Corcoran (Nationals) and Sardinha (Yankees) followed with a single up the middle for his second RBI of the game. The right fielder had a perfect evening at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks.

The Rafters took a 4-0 lead with one run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth. Eric Duncan (Yankees) reached on an error by first baseman Brad Eldred (Pirates) with one out in the fourth. Duncan went to second on a walk to Abercrombie and scored on a single by Sardinha.

Josh Wilson (Marlins) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Garrett Jones (Twins) later plated two more runs with a double.

The Saguaros got a run back in the sixth when Larry Broadway (Nationals) led off with a double off righthander Nick Masset (Rangers) and later scored on a fielder's choice. Broadway made it 4-2 with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Eldred tied the score with a two-run single. Eldred went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Rafters righthander Wes Littleton (Rangers) picked up the win with two scoreless innings. He allowed one hit and struck out three to raise his record to 2-0. Righthander Nic Ungs (Marlins) gave up three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings to lower his ERA to 0.75.

Saguaros lefthander Corwin Malone (White Sox) surrendered one unearned run in four innings. Sean Tracey (White Sox) was charged with three runs, raising his ERA to 17.05. Corcoran dropped to 0-1 after yielding a run on two hits in his lone inning.

Surprise 9, Mesa 3

Travis Hanson (Cardinals) keyed a balanced Scorpions attack with a homer and two RBIs in Surprise's rout of the Solar Sox on Wednesday in Mesa.

Hanson clubbed a solo homer in the seventh inning and capped a four-run eighth with an RBI single.

Eight of nine starters collected at least one hit for the Scorpions. Charlton Jimerson (Astros) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and Matt Tupman (Royals) chipped in with two hits.

Royals righthander Jonah Bayliss (3-0) got the win in relief, walking two in a scoreless fifth inning. Righthander Taylor Buchholz (Astros) started for Surprise and gave up one run on four hits in four innings.

Mesa righthander Angel Guzman (Cubs) yielded two runs on two hits and four walks with one strikeout in three innings.

Brad Snyder (Indians) finished 4-for-4 and is batting .366 for the Solar Sox. David Espinosa (Tigers) launched his first homer for Mesa.
