Snyder gave the Solar Sox a 7-3 lead in the fourth inning, when he hit his first AFL homer, a two-run shot off lefthander Corwin Malone (1-1). Snyder, a first-rounder out of Ball State in 2003, added a solo homer in the sixth and completed his day going 4-for-5 with four runs scored. Garko, a third-round pick out of Stanford in 2003, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. The first baseman delivered a two-run double that tied the score, 3-3, in the third. He also triggered a four-run eighth with an RBI double to right field. Dan Ortmeier (Giants), who had a game-tying sacrifice fly in Mesa's 7-5 win over Surprise on Thursday, went 2-for-5 with three runs scored. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound right fielder also stole two bases. Eric Patterson (Cubs), Snyder, Ortmeier and Garko--the first four batters in Mesa's lineup--combined for seven RBIs and scored 11 runs. Every starter had at least one hit as Mesa pounded out 17, while recording consecutive wins for the first time this season. Reds righthander Allan Simpson (1-0) allowed an unearned run on one hit and one walk with two strikeouts in two innings in relief of starter Adam Miller (Indians). Righthander Travis Foley (Indians), Adam Peterson (Tigers) and Brian Slocum (Indians) combined on four scoreless innings to close out the game. Malone (White Sox) was reached for four runs and four hits with two walks and two strikeouts in two innings. Surprise 7, Peoria Javelinas 0 Four Surprise pitchers combined on a four-hitter in the first AFL shutout this season as the Scorpions blanked Peoria on Friday. Surprise righthander Chris Lambert (Cardinals) allowed three singles, walked one and struck out two over the first three innings. A pair of Royals righthanders dominated the middle innings as Jonah Bayliss (2-0) hurled three hitless frames and Chris Demaria worked a near flawless seventh and eighth. Righthander Travis Minix (Phillies) gave up a single in the ninth. Scorpions designated hitter Corey Smith (Padres) went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, including a two-run blast in the fourth inning. Howie Kendrick (Angels) had a team-high three hits to raise his batting average to .526. Brandon Wood (Angels) and Travis Hanson (Cardinals) scored two runs apiece. Wood also singled home Kendrick in the fifth for his AFL-leading 20th RBI. Peoria righthander Jack Cassel (Padres) was charged with four runs--three earned--on four hits and one walk with five strikeouts in four innings. The Javelinas have lost four straight games. Scorpions left fielder Billy Butler (Royals) was ejected after striking out in the first. Phoenix 6, Grand Canyon 5 Wes Bankston (Devil Rays) drove in three runs as the Phoenix Desert Dogs won their third straight game, edging the visiting Grand Canyon Rafters on Friday. Phoenix received good pitching from a trio of Diamondbacks farmhands. Phoenix lefthander Bill Murphy (1-0) gave up three runs on eight hits and a walk with seven strikeouts over five innings. Lefthander Doug Slaten worked a perfect eighth inning and righthander Casey Daigle retired the side in order in the ninth to secure his second save. The Rafters forged a 3-3 tie in the top of the fifth, but Phoenix responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame against Rafters reliever Jeremy Hill (1-1) of the Mets. Daric Barton (A's) doubled in Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks) and scored on Bankston's double to left. Bankston (Devil Rays), who finished 2-for-4, later came home on a balk. Grand Canyon designated hitter Matt Moses (Twins) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, including a solo homer in the fifth inning. Robert Andino (Marlins) also drove in two runs for the Rafters.
