| 2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 12 Grand Canyon 11, Peoria Saguaros 7 Garrett Jones (Twins) homered and drove in five runs in the first two innings as the Rafters built an early lead and held on for the win against the Saguaros on Wednesday. Jones, a 14th round pick of the Braves in 1999, gave Grand Canyon a 2-0 lead in the first inning, when he followed Eric Duncan's (Yankees) double with a two-run single. In the second, the 6-foot-4, 244-pound Jones followed Duncan's RBI single with a three-run homer to give the Rafters an 8-0 lead. It was the third AFL homer for Jones, who hit 24 and drove in 72 runs in 488 at-bats with Triple-A Rochester during the regular season. He also appeared in eight games in the big leagues, going 2-for-8. Duncan, a first-round pick in 2003, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored to raise his batting average to .519. The 20-year-old has moved from third base to first base this fall. Rafters center fielder Lastings Milledge (Mets) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs before leaving in the fourth with an injured foot. Lefthander Taylor Tankersley (Marlins) allowed three hits, walked three and struck out in three in three scoreless innings of relief to improve to 1-1. Righthander Steven White (Yankees) went four scoreless innings, allowing one hit, walking two and striking out five. Peoria mounted a comeback against righthander T.J. Beam (Yankees). Adam Boeve (Pirates), Robert Valido (White Sox) and Adam Lind (Blue Jays) hit consecutive two-out doubles in a six-run eighth before Beam retired Josh Fields (White Sox) on a flyout. Brendan Harris (Nationals) had a two-out RBI triple in the ninth, but Beam struck out Erik Kratz (Blue Jays) to secure Grand Canyon's second straight win after a 1-4 start. Righthander Sean Tracey (White Sox) took the loss, allowing eight runs--seven earned--and nine hits in three innings. He struck out four and fell to 0-1. Surprise 10, Mesa 1 Padres third baseman Corey Smith pounded out a pair of doubles as Surprise routed Mesa on Wednesday. Smith, a 2000 first-round pick of the Indians, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. The 23-year-old also starred defensively, robbing Kevin Frandsen (Giants) of a base hit in the fourth with a diving stop along the line before forcing Kevin Howard (Reds) at second base. The Scorpions already had a 4-1 lead in the sixth when they added six runs. Charlton Jimerson (Astros) led off with a home run off righthander David Aardsma (Cubs). Cody Haerther (Cardinals) brought in two runs on a bases-loaded single to left, while Angels first baseman Kendry Morales plated two more with a double. Smith capped the inning with an RBI double, putting Surprise up, 10-1. Cardinals righthander Andy Cavazos (1-0) earned the win with two shutout innings, striking out four while giving up just one hit. Mesa righthander Angel Guzman (Cubs) surrendered four runs on six hits and two walks while whiffing four over 3 2/3 innings. The Solar Sox scored their lone run in the third when Brad Snyder (Indians) hit a two-out triple and Chris Denorfia (Reds) followed with a double. Phoenix 5, Peoria Javelinas 1 Righthander Shane Komine (Athletics) pitched five scoreless innings, gave up six hits, and struck out five as the Desert Dogs shut down Peoria on Wednesday. After four scoreless innings, Matt Kemp (Dodgers) scored on a balk in the bottom of the fifth. The Javelinas struck back in the sixth inning with a Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) RBI double. But Phoenix scored four more runs in the seventh off of four singles and an Andre Ethier (Athletics) triple. Dodgers’ prospects Andy LaRoche, Tony Abreu, and Matt Kemp all had two hits on the night. LaRoche also picked up his first stolen base of the season. Lefthander Matt Lynch (Athletics) picked up the win in the battle for first place in the National Division. Lynch allowed a run on two hits over two innings. Lefthander Adam Loewen (Orioles) started for Peoria. Loewen allowed just two hits over four innings. He walked four and struck out two. |
