2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 11

Grand Canyon 8, Surprise 2

Eric Duncan (Yankees) belted two home runs as Grand Canyon Rafters handed Surprise its first loss on Tuesday at Surprise Stadium.

Duncan put Grand Canyon on top, 2-0, with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. Four innings later, the first-round pick in 2003 connected for a three-run bomb to put the game out of reach. He added a single to finish 3-for-4 and raise his batting average to a team-high .522.

David Parrish (Yankees) also went deep for the Rafters, bashing a two-run homer in the fourth to make it 4-0. Bronson Sardinha (Yankees) was 3-for-4 as part of a 15-hit attack, while Denard Span (Twins) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.

Four pitchers combined on a four-hitter without issuing a walk for Rafters. Lefthander Glen Perkins (Twins) yielded two hits and struck out six in four innings. Lefthander Ricky Barrett (Twins) allowed a run on one hit in the fifth before Mets righthander Jeremy Hill (1-0) picked up the win with two hitless frames. Righthander Wes Littleton (Rangers) yielded a run on one hit over the final two innings.

Righthander Jered Weaver (0-1), the Angels' top pitching prospect, gave up two runs on six hits in three innings. The 2004 first-round pick fanned four without issuing a walk.

Brandon Wood (Angels) continued his offensive assault in a losing cause. One day after slugging four homers, the 20-year-old shortstop went 2-for-4 with a double and his league-leading eighth home run. Wood, who has gone deep in five of his six games, also leads the AFL with 16 RBIs and a 1.370 slugging percentage.

Corey Smith (Padres) added a solo shot for the Scorpions, who went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Mesa 9, Peoria Javelinas 2

Lefthander Brian Burres (Giants) tossed five scoreless innings as Mesa coasted past the Peoria Javelinas on Tuesday.

Burres (1-0) became the first Mesa starter to record a win, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out eight.

Matt Murton (Cubs) raised his batting average to .636 by going 3-for-4 with three doubles. He doubled and scored in the second and fifth innings to help the Solar Sox take a 4-0 lead.

Mesa's Chris Denorfia (Reds) had a two-run single in a five-run seventh and finished with three RBIs. Kody Kirkland (Tigers), Eric Patterson (Cubs) and Ryan Garko (Indians) also delivered RBI singles in the seventh.

Peoria righthander Jon Asahina (Rockies) was charged with one run on four hits over two innings with one strikeout. Dan Uggla (Diamondbacks) continued his hot start, going 3-for-4 with an RBI double for the Javelinas.

Peoria Saguaros 7, Phoenix 6

Larry Broadway (Nationals) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs as Peoria held on against Phoenix on Tuesday.

Broadway belted a two-run homer to cap a three-run third inning that gave the Saguaros the lead for good, 5-2. Chris Young (White Sox) had snapped a 2-2 tie with a sacrifice fly before Broadway hit his first home run of the season.

Young was the only Peoria player without a hit, but he delivered a pair of sacrifice flies.

Josh Fields (White Sox) gave the Saguaros the lead in the opening inning with a solo shot off Phoenix righthander Paul Bush (Braves). Brandon Moss (Red Sox) made it 2-0 with a RBI single in the second, but Kurt Suzuki (Athletics) tied the score in the bottom of the inning with a two-run double.

Suzuki went 2-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the Desert Dogs. Daric Barton (Athletics) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Jason Pridie (Devil Rays) turned in the defensive play of the game when he climbed the wall in center field to rob Fields in the ninth and keep it a one-run game.

Lefthander Corwin Malone (White Sox) picked up the win, despite yielding two runs in two innings. Lefthander David Maust (Nationals) started for the Saguaros and surrendered three runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings.
