| 2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 8 Phoenix 16, Grand Canyon 8 Future Diamondbacks were on display Saturday, as Alex Frazier belted a first-inning grand slam and Stephen Drew scored four runs as Phoenix outslugged Grand Canyon at Surprise Stadium. Diamondbacks outfielder Jarred Ball led off the game with a walk before Drew and Andre Ethier (Athletics) loaded the bases with one-out singles. Frazier followed with a slam--one of four Desert Dogs homers--to give his team the early lead. In the top of the second, Ethier ripped a two-out, three-run double to put Phoenix on top, 7-1. Drew, who scored on the play, bashed a two-run homer in the fourth before drawing a walk and scoring his final run two innings later. Ball and Miguel Montero (Diamondbacks) each went deep and finished 2-for-5 for Phoenix. Drew was 3-for-4, and Elliott Johnson (Devil Rays) went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, a triple and a stolen base. Despite all the run support from his fellow Diamondbacks farmhands, Phoenix lefthander Bill Murphy settled for a no-decision, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six in four innings. Braves righthander Ryan Basner (1-0) earned the win with a perfect inning in relief. Mets lefthander Evan MacLane (0-1) took the loss for the Rafters. The 22-year-old was tagged for seven runs on six hits and a walk in two innings. Among 12 Desert Dogs, all but Tony Abreu (Dodgers) had at least one hit, run or RBI. Rafters pitchers Taylor Tankersley (Marlins) and Matt Lindstrom (Mets) were both tagged for four runs, Tankersley in three innings and Lindstrom after retiring one of eight he faced in the sixth inning. Eric Duncan (Yankees) led the Rafters' offense with two homers and four RBIs. Chase Lambin (Mets) added a three-run shot. Mesa 12, Peoria Saguaros 2 Adam Miller (Indians) and Brian Wilson (Giants) hurled three shutout innings apiece as Mesa defeated the visiting Peoria Saguaros on Saturday night. It was the first victory of the season for the Solar Sox, while the Saguaros remain winless. Miller allowed three hits over the game's first three innings. Wilson (1-0) came on and allowed just one hit over his three innings of work while striking out four. After scoring a run in the second, third, fourth and fifth frames, the Solar Sox broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning in which Peoria hurlers issued six two-out walks. Chris Denorfia (Reds) reached base in all five of his plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with three walks and three RBIs. Dan Ortmeier (Giants) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, while Kevin Howard (Reds) homered and scored twice. The Saguaros scored both their runs in the seventh inning. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Roberts (Blue Jays) scored Brendan Harris (Nationals), who had doubled to lead off the inning. Three batters later, a single to left field by Brandon Moss (Red Sox) plated pinch-runner Erik Kratz (Blue Jays). Pirates righthander Matt Peterson (0-1) took the loss. The 23-year-old started for the Saguaros, allowing two runs on two hits and five walks over 2 1/3 innings. Of the four relievers who followed, only lefthander Paulino Reynoso (White Sox) didn't allow a run. Surprise 14, Peoria Javelinas 4 Brandon Wood's three-run home run highlighted a six-run seventh inning as unbeaten Surprise pounded the Peoria Javelinas on Saturday in Peoria. It was the first loss for the Javelinas after starting the AFL season with three victories. Woods' homer broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh inning. After bashing a minor league-leading 43 homers at high Class A Rancho Cucamonga, the 20-year-old Angels' shortstop has homered in three of his first four AFL games. Billy Butler (Royals) also had a big afternoon for the Scorpions. The 19-year-old left fielder went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Howie Kendrick (Angels) collected a pair of singles and scored three runs.
