2005 Arizona Fall League Daily: Games Of October 7

Surprise 7, Phoenix 2

Angels first baseman Kendry Morales and Astros outfielder Charlton Jimerson teed off on the Desert Dogs as Surprise beat Phoenix on Friday.

Morales hit a game-tying solo homer in the fourth off righthander Jamie Shields (Devil Rays), then drove in the go-ahead run two innings later when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Josh Anderson (Astros) to give the Scorpions a 2-1 advantage.

Jimerson added a three-run homer in the eighth off Dodgers righthander Beau Dannemiller. Both Morales and Jimerson went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Royals righthander Jonah Bayliss (1-0), who made 11 appearances in Kansas City this season, picked up the win out of the bullpen. The 25-year-old struck out four over two innings while allowing a run on two hits.

Devil Rays righthander Wade Townsend (0-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on three hits over two innings while striking out two. Andre Ethier (Athletics) hit a two-out solo homer in the seventh that lifted the Desert Dogs within 4-2.

Shields, a 16th-round pick in 2000 tossed four strong innings in his first fall start, fanning five while allowing one run on four hits.

Grand Canyon 7, Mesa 4

Lastings Milledge cranked a three-run homer in the ninth inning to give Grand Canyon its first AFL win over Mesa on Friday.

The Mets outfielder broke a 4-4 tie with his three-run shot over left-center field wall off Giants reliever Jeremy Accardo (0-1). Milledge went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

Righthander Wes Littleton (Rangers) retired all six batters he faced to pick up the win, while Twins righthander Travis Bowyer earned the save by striking out the side around a hit in the ninth.

Grand Canyon scored three times in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Matt Moses (Twins) doubled in Josh Wilson (Marlins), and Eric Duncan (Yankees), who went 4-for-5, capped the inning with a two-run double.

The Solar Sox tied it in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a pair of Giants prospects. Kevin Frandsen tripled in two runs, then scored on Dan Ortmeier's base hit.

Mesa righthander Humberto Sanchez (Tigers) allowed an unearned run on three hits and fanned seven over four innings for the winless Solar Sox (0-3).

Peoria Javelinas 12, Peoria Saguaros 6

Diamondbacks second baseman Dan Uggla continued his torrid start, powering the Javelinas past the Saguaros on Friday.

Uggla, one of four Javelinas to homer, slugged a three-run shot off righthander Chris Schroder (Nationals) in the fifth to give the Javelinas a 6-3 lead. After hitting 21 homers at Double-A Tennessee during the regular season, the 25-year-old infielder has homered in each of the first three AFL games.

Jeff Clement (Mariners), Ian Stewart (Rockies) and Michael Johnson (Padres) also homered for the Javelinas, with Stewart blasting a grand slam in the sixth to open a 10-3 lead.

Righthander Ramon Ramirez (Rockies) (1-0) earned the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He gave up two hits and escaped a jam in the fourth with an inning-ending strikeout.

The Saguaros had just taken a 3-2 lead and had the bases loaded with two outs when Ramirez came in to face White Sox shortstop Robert Valido. Ramirez quickly defused the situation by whiffing Valido on three pitches.

Schroder (0-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three in one inning. Ryan Roberts (Blue Jays) had a productive night from the second spot in the order, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and a run scored, while catcher Neil Walker (Pirates) hit a solo homer in the eighth.
