Surprise 11, Peoria Saguaros 6

The Surprise Scorpions (2-0) scored eight runs in the first two innings and withstood a late rally against the Peoria Saguaros (0-2)Tuesday.

Brandon Wood (Angels) hit his second home run of the AFL to put the Scorpions up 3-0 in the first. Billy Butler (Royals) teed off for a three-run home run in the second as Surprise took a commanding 8-0 lead.

Trailing 11-2 in the eighth, Peoria scored two runs in the eight and ninth innings. Brendan Harris (Nationals) hit a two-run home run inthe ninth to cap the scoring at 11-6.

Butler hadled the Scorpions with four hits and four RBIs. Howie Kendrick (Angels) also added three hits. Robert Valido (White Sox) led theSaguaros with three hits.

Lefthander Phillip Barzilla (Astros) earned the win in relief for Surprise. Barzilla tossed two shutout innings. Lefthander David Maust (Nationals) suffered the loss. Maust gave up six earned runs on six hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Righthander Jered Weaver (Angels) got the start for the Scorpions, whiffing six of the seven batters he faced.

Phoenix 8, Mesa 7

Tampa Bay outfielder Jason Pridie got his Arizona Fall League season off to a blistering start as Phoenix (2-0)beat Mesa (0-2) on Wednesday at HoHoKam Park.

Pridie went 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and hit a game-tying three-run homer off righthander Brian Slocum (Indians) in the top of the seventh inning.

Stephen Drew (Diamondbacks) broke that tie in the eighth, leading off the inning with a home run to right to make it 6-5. One out later, James Loney (Dodgers) reached on an error and Wes Bankston (Devil Rays) followed with a two-run homer to center to give the Desert Dogs a three-run lead.

Bankston went 2-for-4, while Tony Abreu (Dodgers) was 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the third.

Lefthander Doug Slaten (Diamondbacks) earned his first win after pitching the seventh and eighth innings, allowing a run on three hits while striking out one. Righthander Casey Daigle (Diamondbacks) survived a rocky ninth to pick up the save.

Brandon Sing (Cubs) battered the Desert Dogs' staff as he went 3-for-4 with three doubles. His third double drove in a run in the ninth, cutting Phoenix's lead to 8-7 before Daigle retired the next three batters to end the game.

Tigers righthander Adam Peterson (0-1) took the loss for the Solar Sox, allowing three runs--two earned--on two hits over 1 1/3 innings, striking out two.

Peoria Javelinas 13, Grand Canyon 4

Dan Uggla's AFL season is off to a good start.

For the second straight game, Uggla (Diamondbacks) homered and scored three runs as the visiting Peoria Javelinas (2-0)coasted past Grand Canyon (0-2) on Wednesday.

Uggla ripped a second-inning double and scored the game's first run when Ian Stewart (Rockies) followed with a homer off Yankees righthander Steven White (0-1). Uggla walked and scored during a six-run third inning and bashed a leadoff homer in the fifth to increase the lead to 9-0.

Brandon Fahey (Orioles) led the Javelinas' 14-hit attack by going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Stewart went 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, while Tripper Johnson (Orioles) added a double and three RBIs.

Orioles righthander Cory Morris (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief of starter Adam Loewen (Orioles), who surrendered one hit and one walk while striking out four in three scoreless innings.

Lastings Milledge (Mets) went 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI in the losing cause. Kevin Mahar (Rangers) and Matt Moses (Twins) each finished 2-for-3.

There are no games scheduled for Thursday in the AFL. Friday, Phoenix plays at Surprise; Peoria faces Peoria in Peoria; and Grand Canyon travels to Mesa. No pitching matchups have been announced.
