Garza, Young Highlight Challenge Trade

The Twins and Rays dealt from surplus in a blockbuster prospect swap on Nov. 28 that sent outfielder Delmon Young to Minnesota and righthander Matt Garza to Tampa Bay. Rounding out the trade, the Twins received shortstop Brendan Harris and outfielder Jason Pridie, while the Rays got righthander Eduardo Morlan and shortstop Jason Bartlett.

Cubs Welcome Trachsel Back

Steve Trachsel broke into the majors with the Cubs and won 60 games for Chicago from 1993-99. Now he's coming home again, as the Cubs added him for the stretch drive in a Thursday trade with the Orioles. In return, Baltimore received a pair of Triple-A players, third baseman/outfielder Scott Moore and righthander Rocky Cherry. Nov. 5 update: The deal had a condition that provided Baltimore with a third prospect if Chicago made the playoffs, so the Cubs sent righthander Jake Renshaw to the Orioles as well.

Cards Add Branyan As Insurance

With Scott Rolen's left shoulder ailing again, the Cardinals moved to pick up some third-base insurance on Friday. They added Russell Branyan from the Phillies in exchange for a player to be named. Philadelphia ultimately received cash considerations to complete the deal.

Cubs Grab Monroe For His Righty Pop

With Alfonso Soriano and Angel Pagan on the disabled list, the National League Central-leading Cubs have sought an outfielder who can hit lefthanders. They made a deal for one on Thursday, acquiring Craig Monroe from the Tigers for a player to be named plus cash toward his $4.775 million salary. Detroit acquired Triple-A lefthander Clay Rapada to complete the deal on Aug. 30.

Pena Era Ends In Boston

The Wily Mo Pena era ended in Boston on Friday, not having worked out as the Red Sox had hoped. It concluded with his trade to the Nationals for a player to be named or cash considerations. Four days later, it expanded into a three-team deal, with Washington shipping Triple-A righthander Emiliano Fruto to the Diamondbacks for Triple-A slugger Chris Carter, who went to Boston as the payment for Pena.

Mariners Add Fourth Lefty To Bullpen

The Mariners continue to hang tough in the American League West race, and they made a small trade Thursday to get some bullpen help. Seattle acquired John Parrish from the Orioles in exchange for minor league outfielder Sebastien Boucher and either a player to be named or cash considerations. Baltimore ultimately received cash considerations to complete the deal.
