San Francisco sent Mark Sweeney to Los Angeles in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations. On Aug. 26, the Giants received high Class A second baseman Travis Denker to complete the trade.

Cardinals Hope Pineiro Can Help Staff

It certainly wasn't the Red Sox' biggest bullpen move on Tuesday, but it was their first. Boston kicked off the deals on Deadline Day by sending Joel Pineiro to the Cardinals for a player to be named. The Sox also included cash toward Pineiro's $4 million salary. Oct. 6 update: St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer and BA correspondent Derrick Goold reports that Boston will receive Double-A outfielder Sean Danielson to complete the deal at some point following the World Series.

Red Sox Fortify Bullpen With Gagne

The Red Sox already had all-stars Jonathan Papelbon and Hideki Okajima in the their bullpen, and they made it more formidable on Tuesday. Boston picked up Eric Gagne from the Rangers for Kason Gabbard and minor league outfielders David Murphy and Engel Beltre.
