The Reds extended their affiliation agreement with Triple-A Louisville through 2016 at the end of January. A couple of days later, Reds general manager Walt Jocketty gave the Bats a signing bonus. Everyone knows who the No. 1 catching prospect in the Reds organization is. Devin Mesoraco is the catcher of the future. But Tucker Barnhart gives the Reds good depth at the position. Barnhart, a 21-year-old switch-hitter, won the 2011 Gold Glove for the entire minor leagues. That's quite an honor, considering Barnhart spent the year at low Class A Dayton. But the Reds are also pleased with the progress of another shortstop in the system. Didi Gregorius is actually ahead of Hamilton on the depth chart. It was his promotion to Triple-A Louisville from Double-A Pensacola opened a spot for Hamilton.

Hamilton Improving At Shortstop For Reds

John Fay -Premium Content

Billy Hamilton's basestealing gets plenty of attention. That's understandable, considering he is on a collision course with Vince Coleman's all-time steals record of 145. But Hamilton is not going to get to the big leagues on his speed alone. The other parts of his game must develop as well. The Reds are pleased with the way his defense at shortstop and his hitting have improved.
