These players' minor league contracts expired following the 2012 season and they failed to reach an agreement with their organizations for the 2013 season. • Elected free agents (also known as Article XX-D free agents) gained their freedom after refusing outright assignments to the minors after being removed from the 40-man roster.

Latin American winter league assignments are listed for participating free agents: DL (Dominican), MPL (Mexican Pacific), PRL (Puerto Rican) and VL (Venezuelan). A handful of players spend time in the Australian Baseball League (ABL), now in its third year.
