McCreery was a fairly big name on the showcase circuit during his high school days as a 6-foot-8 lefthander who flashed 91 mph heat and a promising slider. But he missed most of his senior spring with an elbow injury, threw just 14 innings as a freshman at Arizona State in 2012, then posted a 6.93 ERA in 38 innings as an ASU sophomore. He transferred to NAIA Azusa Pacific for his junior year and struggled with his control, going 5-3, 3.90 with 72 strikeouts and 50 walks in 67 innings. Now listed at 6-8, 249 pounds, McCreery is a behemoth, but his delivery is stiff and robotic, and scouts question his arm speed. His fringy fastball ranges from 87-90 mph, and he doesn't command it well. His slurvy breaking ball rates as below-average, and he misses arm-side and up with it often. A club might take a flier on McCreery because of his size, but he's a project.
