Riley was a third baseman for most of his high school career, but his coach (who also happens to be his father) listened to scouts and got John to move behind the plate this spring. With his thick, 6-foot, 210-pound build, he fits better back there. Riley has a lot of strength and above-average bat speed, and he'll be more of a power producer than a high average hitter. Defensively, he has the tools to be an average catcher, though he'll need more repetitions and coaching. He isn't a great athlete, but has good body control and above-average arm strength. He is also intelligent and works hard. Riley is a good student but is considered signable away from his California commitment. The Giants are believed to be the team that likes him best and could draft him as high as the second round.
