Shryock was not highly recruited out of a tiny private school outside Palm Springs, Calif., and he struggled over his first two seasons at Bakersfield. He blossomed as a junior this spring, hitting .363/.419/.433. He has become a tough out, a slasher with enough strength in his lefthanded swing to drive the gaps from time to time. The 6-foot, 170-pounder has a chance to become an average hitter, although he lacks power and is just an average runner. Shyrock is steady but unspectacular at short, and his range and fringy arm fit better at second in pro ball.
