Undrafted and undersized, Doolittle has earned comparisons to another former Mississippi State Bulldog, Jeff Brantley. Doolittle goes right at hitters with a straight 88-91 mph fastball that touches 93. He complements his heater with a plus 12-to-6 curveball he throws at two different speeds, as well as a little slider he'll mix in for effect. Doolittle hides the ball well, shows a good feel for pitching and has tremendous confidence. That combination enables him to get tons of strikeouts up in the zone, much to the amazement of the Marlins. In two pro seasons, he has averaged 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings, so he must be doing something right. His lack of pedigree will force Doolittle to prove himself each year, but that just seems to drive him even more. After a strong finish in high Class A to end 2006, he could open this season in Double-A.
