When Houston's 1-2 punch of Jake Lemoine and Aaron Garza fell apart this spring because of Lemoine's shoulder injury and Garza's ineffectiveness, Dowdy stepped up to provide a much needed anchor to Houston's rotation. Dowdy spent his freshman year at Hawaii, transferred to Orange Coast (Calif.) JC and redshirted in 2014 at Houston, so he's a well-traveled 22-year-old redshirt junior. Dowdy's up-tempo delivery has some effort, and it isn't pretty, but he's strong enough to maintain his 90-91 mph velocity deep into games and he can reach back for 92-93 when he needs it. Neither his changeup or his breaking ball rates more than average, but he does locate both of them well.
