After struggling in his first two seasons at San Diego State, Walby worked his way into the weekend rotation this year, going 3-3, 3.60 with 52 strikeouts and 48 walks in 80 innings. As his numbers suggest, he needs to improve his command and control, but his arm strength is tantalizing. Walby runs his fastball up to 94-97 mph early in games and loses velocity quickly, settling in at 90-91. His lack of command and his violent delivery, which includes a pronounced head snap, causes most scouts to project him as a reliever. His slurvy breaking ball is decent when he gets on top of it, but more often it is a below-average pitch without much depth, and he has a tendency to pull it well out of the zone. He lacks feel for his changeup, another indicator that he is best suited for the bullpen.
