From Cypress, Texas, Donato was a pitcher and catcher at Cypress Woods High, where he caught the likes of Texas A&M reliever Ryan Hendrix and Athletics' farmhand Casey Meisner. His future is on the mound, though, which is where he spent three seasons at West Virginia. The 6-foot, 180-pound righthander put up a gaudy 111-to-20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 96 innings this spring, going 3-4, 3.27 for the Mountaineers. He pitches around 89-92 mph but can dial it up to 94 mph and throws a 12-to-6 breaking ball with depth and a below-average change. Donato left a Big 12 start early due to an arm injury in late May. An MRI revealed a UCL strain.
