2011 Bonuses Vs. Slots

Bonuses and estimated MLB slot recommendations for the first five rounds of the 2010 draft, along with the estimated slots for the same picks in the prior two drafts. The commissioner's office establishes guidelines for every pick through the first five rounds, and sets a $150,000 ceiling for subsequent rounds.

Boldface denotes above-slot bonuses, asterisks indicate the bonus was part of a major league contract and plus signs signify a two-sport contract (allowing the club to spread the bonus over as many as five years). We may revise these estimates as more information becomes available.

Note that MLB hasn't changed its slot values since 2009 and that the current values are lower than the 2006 recommendations. The commissioner's office slashed the slots by 10 percent in 2007 (based on a misguided belief that the new collective bargaining agreement would give teams more leverage), restored most of those cuts in 2008, then reduced its recommendations further in 2009.

For a point of comparison, MLB valued the top 50 slots in 2010 (and again this year) as worth a combined $70 million. The 50 largest bonuses in the 2010 draft totaled $96 million, a difference of 37 percent.
