Scouting Director: Rudy Terrasas (first year: 2006)
Order in 2007 Rotation: 29th
Extra Picks: Supplemental first round (42nd, for loss of Type A free agent Roberto Hernandez to Indians), supplemental first round (47th, for loss of Type A free agent Chad Bradford to Orioles), second round (77th, for loss of Hernandez), third round (99th, for loss of Bradford)
Lost Picks: First round (29th, for signing Type A free agent Moises Alou)
Trend: The Mets have overhauled their scouting department several times in recent years, making detecting a trend next to impossible. Over the years, though, the Mets have had no qualms about taking two-sport players or athletes with upside; performance has mattered less than tools in their assessment of amateurs.
This Year's Outlook: New York doesn't pick until 42nd overall, then goes again five picks later and has extra picks in the second and third rounds. In his first draft in his current position, scouting director Rudy Terrassas already produced a big leaguer in last year's third-rounder, Joe Smith, and went college-heavy to complement the Mets' heavy international presence. The Mets should mix it up with their top selections this year.
