Draft Report Card Overview
We began our two-part recap of the 2002 draft by analyzing the performance of the first 100 players selected and reporting on the top unsigned picks. We delve deeper this time around with our annual Draft Report Cards, examining each teams efforts on an individual basis. Executive editor Jim Callis spoke to scouting directors and used the information gathered in BAs predraft coverage to write the team capsules.
For most of the categories, a player must have signed to be eligible for inclusion. The exceptions are Most Intriguing Background and The One Who Got Away. This year, weve added the Best Breaking Ball for each team. For Best Late-Round Pick, only players drafted in the 10th round or later are considered. The number in parentheses after a players name indicates the round he was selected.
We no longer give teams a letter grade because its too difficult to know how well they did just four months after the draft. But we do know enough to offer our first impressions below, arrived at by Callis and editor Allan Simpson. More detailed information is provided with the team capsules.
