Early Signing Period Roundup

Florida lands a standout recruiting class

College baseball's early signing period begins today, and Florida looks like the biggest winner.

The Gators lead all schools with eight signees ranked among Baseball America's top 100 high school prospects for the 2009 draft (see chart below). The highest-ranked Florida recruits are corner infielder Bobby Borchering (No. 12), catcher Austin Maddox (18) and second baseman LeVon Washington (20), but Florida also has a number of signees in the 40-100 range, where players are usually safer from the draft. In coach Kevin O'Sullivan's first recruiting class at Florida last year, the Gators signed six top 100 recruits in the early signing period, and five of them (No. 19 Nick Maronde, No. 67 Tyler Thompson, No. 75 Anthony Desclafani, No. 98 Ben McMahan and No. 100 Greg Larson) showed up in Gainesville, helping Florida's 2008 class rank as fifth-best in the nation. If the Gators land even half of their 2009 haul, they'll once again rank among the nation's best classes next fall.

Southern California also did well in the early signing period, landing six recruits in the top 100. Infielders Jiovanni Mier (No. 13) and Matt Davidson (16) could be draft risks, but the Trojans have four other signees in the back half of the list. Last year, USC landed just one of its four top 100 signees (No. 91 Ricky Oropesa) while losing its highest-profile recruits to the draft (No. 2 Tim Beckham, No. 10 Aaron Hicks and No. 53 Mike Tonkin).

Other schools that cleaned up with top 100 recruits include Arizona State (five), Cal State Fullerton (four), Louisiana State (four), and San Diego (four).
On the whole, more of last year's top 100 wound up in school than usual. Fifty-one of last year's top 100 attended the schools they committed to in the early signing period, while five others attended school elsewhere. That's an increase of eight from the previous year.

Also, more elite recruits opted for college over the professional ranks. Four of last year's top nine prospects ended up at school (No. 3 Harold Martinez to Miami; No. 5 Alex Meyer to Kentucky; No. 6 Sonny Gray to Vanderbilt; No. 9 Gerrit Cole to UCLA). The previous year, 12 of the top 13 wound up signing pro contracts, and the year before that each of the top 11 signed. So there's hope for schools that gambled on the likes of Matt Purke and Shelby Miller.

The early signing period lasts until next week; we will update the chart below with commitments as they are announced, and we'll have a detailed analysis of the early signing period next week when all the signings become official.
