2008 Top 100 Prospects College Commitments

Wednesday was the start of the early signing period, the first day high school seniors can officially commit to colleges; here's a look at the Baseball America Top 100 prospects for the class of 2007 (as ranked by National Writer Alan Matthews) and where they have committed.

It's difficult to rank early signing classes because historically only about half—at most—of the top 100 high school seniors will bypass the draft and show up at school the next fall. Of the top 100 high school prospects at this time a year ago, 48 showed up on campus, compared with 51 the previous year. Private schools have a much better chance at steering top 100-caliber players through the draft and onto campus. In the class of 2007, 28 players committed to private schools, and 19 of them wound up on campus (about 68 percent); 69 players committed to public schools, but just 28 of them ended up at school (about 41 percent).

The players at the top of this list typically wind up signing professional contracts; last year, 12 of the top 13 prospects ended up in pro ball, and the previous year the top 11 all signed. Of course, the one exception last year was the No. 1 player on the list, Matt Harvey, who went to North Carolina. Coincidentally, the top player on this year's list is also a UNC signee, righthander Tim Melville.

The Tar Heels and Kentucky each have five recruits among the top 100 prospects, trailing only Georgia (seven), Florida and UCLA (six apiece). Two-time defending champion Oregon State, Arizona State, Vanderbilt and Arkansas each have four recruits on the list.

It's worth noting that this list is not official, as most schools are still waiting for national letters of intent to file in. Already we've seen several notable players de-commit from one school and commit to another, including Arizona outfielder Jaff Decker, who opted for Arizona State over UCLA. Since these commitments are unofficial, they are subject to change even during the course of the early signing period.

We'll have much more analysis on the early signing period in the coming weeks as recruiting classes become official.
