BOSTON–A week after the Mets acquired David Justice from the Yankees, they sent him on to the Athletics for lefthander Mark Guthrie and minor league righthander Tyler Yates.
Yates was drafted out of Hawaii in the 23rd round of the 1998 draft. He emerged as a prospect in 2001 and was added to the Oakland 40-man roster this offseason.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Yates improved his velocity from the 90-92 mph range to 92-94 and began throwing his slider for strikes last season. He notched 17 saves at Double-A Midland to go with a 4-6, 4.31 record in a tough home park for pitchers.
Yates allowed 66 hits and 27 walks in 63 innings with 61 strikeouts before he was rewarded with a late-season promotion to Triple-A Sacramento.
