Sixth overall pick Jeremy Sowers and the Indians agreed to a 2005 contract with a $2.475 million bonus Tuesday. Six first-round picks remain unsigned; all are college players.
Sowers went 10-6, 3.08 with 119 strikeouts and 29 walks in 123 innings as a junior at Vanderbilt. The lefthander rated the second-most polished college player in the draft behind Long Beach State’s Jered Weaver and the third-closest to the majors behind Weaver and Texas’ Huston Street because of his ability to throw four pitches for strikes, including a lively 85-91 mph fastball and solid-average slider.
The Reds drafted the 6-foot-1, 175-pound athlete 20th overall out of Louisville’s Ballard High in 2001 but exerted little effort to sign him away from his college commitment.
