U.S. Smacks Aruba In Pan Am Qualifier

Royals lefthander Everett Teaford struck out 10 of the 16 batters he faced in five scoreless innings as Team USA crushed Aruba 14-0 in seven innings in the Pan Am Qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico.

Dodgers outfielder Jamie Hoffman had three hits in three trips to help pace the U.S. offense, while Brian Barden (Marlins) had a two-run home run. Gerwin Thiel held the Americans scoreless in the first two innings before Barden's two-run homer in the third, and Mike Moustakas (Royals) hit a solo homer later in the inning. The U.S. added a run in the fourth, six in the fifth on four hits and two errors, and four more runs in the sixth.

The U.S. plays Colombia on Monday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. local time.

In other games, Venezuela upset Canada 5-3. Venezuela's team lacks current affiliated players but featured the likes of former Cubs lefthander Jesus Yepez, the starter who pitched into the sixth inning; former Cardinals farmhand Wilmer Alvarado at third, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs; and former Red Sox farmhand Tony Granadillo, who had two hits and two RBIs. Canada's Cole Armstrong (White Sox) hit a solo homer in a losing effort as Canada dropped to 1-1 in Pool B.

In the game of the day, host Puerto Rico lost 3-2 to the Dominican Republic in 13 innings. The Dominican team has plenty of familiar names, from starter Lorenzo Barcelo and relievers Bartolome Fortunato and Hector Carrasco to a lineup that includes former all-star Tony Batista and speedster Bernie Castro. The teams combined for just 13 hits.

The U.S. and Panama are the two 2-0 teams in Pool A in the round robin. Cuba is the lone unbeaten team in Pool B.
