Aaron Fitt -Premium Content

Talent was up across the short-season New York-Penn League in 2008. Rarely has the league seen the quality of catching it featured this summer. Tri-City's Jason Castro, a first-round pick in June, topped this list, while Vermont's Derek Norris and Williamsport's Travis D'Arnaud, high school draftees in 2007, ranked in the top five. Jamestown's Miguel Fermin slugged a league-leading 17 homers and showed a strong arm but did not crack the Top 20 as a 23-year-old.

Pioneer League Top 20 Prospects With Scouting Reports

Ben Badler -Premium Content

The Rookie-level Pioneer League is always a tricky league to evaluate, as it's somewhat of a tweener circuit. The Diamondbacks and Rockies don't have complex-based teams so their PL club serves as their lowest-level U.S. affiliate. By contrast, the other six organizations in the league don't have teams in the New-York Penn or Northwest leagues, so their PL clubs are their highest-level half-season affiliates. The dichotomy creates an interesting mix of talent in the hitter-friendly league, with players ranging from raw Latin American prospects to much more polished college draft picks.

What would the 2006 draft look like if it were held today? Would the Mariners lose much if they didn't sign first-rounder Joshua Fields? Should Travis Hafner have made a rehab stint in the Eastern League playoffs?

Arizona League Top 20 Prospects

Bill Mitchell -

The Rookie-level Arizona League was on the brink of extinction two years ago when Major League Baseball considered compressing the minor leagues. Now the AZL's outlook is brighter than ever, with as many as four teams added in the next two years as more big league teams move their training bases to Arizona or add teams at the lower end of their farm systems.
