Helena (Brewers) rightfielder Erik Komatsu continued to torch Pioneer League pitching on Sunday night, going 3-for-5 with a double and a triple. Komatsu,the Brewers’ eighth-round pick out of Cal State Fullerton, has been one of the most impressive hitters in the Pioneer League in 2008.After his big day Sunday, Komatsu is batting .326/.393/.516 in 23 games. Komatsu’s triple was the first of his professional career.
Danville (Braves) third baseman Jon Gilmore was one of the lone bright spots for Danville in Sunday’s loss to last-place Burlington. Gilmore raised his average to .350 on the year, with a 2-for-4 performance in the loss. . .Rashun Dixon (Athletics) continued his tear through the Arizona League on Sunday, going 2-for-6 in a 17-9 rout over the AZL Brewers. Taking a day off from fielding duties and serving as the AZL Athletics DH, Dixon ripped his fifth double of the year in the seventh inning. Dixon had three RBI in the contest, raising his season total to 15. . .J.J. Putz (Mariners) began working his way back from elbow problems on Sunday in the Arizona League. The righthander drew the start for the AZL Mariners and threw a scoreless inning. Putz is expected to make one more start for the AZL Mariners on Tuesday, before throwing at Triple-A Tacoma on Friday. . .Righthander Burke Badenhop (Marlins) threw three scoreless innings for the GCL Marlins in a rehab start. Badenhop, who has been battling shoulder tendinitis, struck out two and allowed just one hit in the start. . . GCL Nationals lefthander Jack McGeary continues to show signs of improvement in the GCL. Looking to build off his best start of the year (5IP, 4H, 2ER, 5K, 0 BB) on July 8th, McGeary threw six innings, allowing just two runs. McGeary, who received a record $1.8 million bonus in the sixth round of the 2007 draft, struck out five in the game while giving up six hits. . .Former N.C. State righthander Clayton Shunick (Reds) struggled in Sunday’s start for Billings. Shunick took the loss after he lasted just 2/3 of an inning against Orem. The righthander gave up nine runs on seven hits while also hitting two batters. The dreadful start was a setback for Shunick who had entered the game with 3.79 ERA and 12 strikeouts in his past two outings.
What to Watch For Today
Billings (Reds) will look for a better performance from their starter tonight as they send righthander Leonardo Astorga to the hill. Astorga is 1-0 on the year with a 2.21 ERA.
